چکیده

We develop a theory for the dynamics of the density matrix describing a multimode polariton condensate. In such a condensate several single-particle orbitals become highly occupied, due to stimulated scattering from reservoirs of high-energy excitons. A generic few-parameter model for the system leads to a Lindblad equation which includes saturable pumping, decay, and condensate interactions. We show how this theory can be used to obtain the population distributions, and the time-dependent firstand second-order coherence functions, in such a multimode condensate. As a specific application, we consider a polaritonic Josephson junction, formed from a double-well potential. We obtain the population distributions, emission line shapes, and widths (first-order coherence functions), and predict the dephasing time of the Josephson oscillations.

Supermode-density-wave-polariton condensation with a Bose–Einstein condensate in a multimode cavity

Phase transitions, where observable properties of a many-body system change discontinuously, can occur in both open and closed systems. By placing cold atoms in optical cavities and inducing strong coupling between light and excitations of the atoms, one can experimentally study phase transitions of open quantum systems. Here we observe and study a non-equilibrium phase transition, the condensa...

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Long-Lifetime Polaritons in Thermal Equilibrium.

The experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) with atoms and quasiparticles has triggered wide exploration of macroscopic quantum effects. Microcavity polaritons are of particular interest because quantum phenomena such as BEC and superfluidity can be observed at elevated temperatures. However, polariton lifetimes are typically too short to permit thermal equilibration. This ...

Finite-size fluctuations and photon statistics near the polariton condensation transition in a single-mode microcavity

We consider polariton condensation in a generalized Dicke model, describing a single-mode cavity containing quantum dots, and extend our previous mean-field theory to allow for finite-size fluctuations. Within the fluctuation-dominated regime the correlation functions differ from their trivial mean-field values. We argue that the low-energy physics of the model, which determines the photon stat...

Photonic Crystal Architecture for Room-Temperature Equilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensation of Exciton Polaritons

We describe photonic crystal microcavities with very strong light-matter interaction to realize roomtemperature, equilibrium, exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). This goal is achieved through a careful balance between strong light trapping in a photonic band gap (PBG) and large exciton density enabled by a multiple quantum-well (QW) structure with a moderate dielectric constant....

Polariton Lasing Due to the Exciton–Electron Scattering in Semiconductor Microcavities

The issue of polariton lasing in n-doped microcavities is addressed. We show theoretically that the introduction of a cold electron gas into quantum microcavities induces efficient electron–polariton scattering. This process allows the condensation of the polaritons accumulated at the bottleneck to the final emitting state with a transition time of a few picoseconds, opening the way to a new ge...
