Gravitational-wave sources

چکیده

The sources of gravitational radiation that seem to be most likely to be detected by planned groundand space-based gravitational-wave detectors are reviewed, with particular attention to the likely information that observations of them will reveal. A particular emphasis is placed on observations by LISA, the fundamental-physics Cornerstone project of the European Space Agency’s Horizon 2000+ programme. Mapping the gravitational wave background

The gravitational wave sky is expected to have isolated bright sources superimposed on a diffuse gravitational wave background. The background radiation has two components: a confusion limited background from unresolved astrophysical sources; and a cosmological component formed during the birth of the universe. A map of the gravitational wave background can be made by sweeping a gravitational w...

A practical theorem on gravitational wave backgrounds

There is an extremely simple relationship between the spectrum of the gravitational wave background produced by a cosmological distribution of discrete gravitational wave sources, the total time-integrated energy spectrum of an individual source, and the present-day comoving number density of remnants. Stated in this way, the background is entirely independent of the cosmology, and only weakly ...

0 Potential Sources of Gravitational Wave Emission and Laser

The properties of potential gravitational wave sources like neutron stars, black holes and binary systems are reviewed, as well as the different contributions (stochastic and continuous) to the gravitational wave background. The detectability of these sources by the present generation of laser beam interferometers, which will be fully operational around 2002, is also considered.

Gravitational Waves from a Cosmological Distribution of Sources

The advent of gravitational wave detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna and the Advanced-Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory will make it possible to observe many gravitational wave emission phenomena that may or may not have electromagnetic counterparts. In many cases, gravitational waves serve as probes of length and time scales that range many orders of magn...

LISA Sources in Globular Clusters

Globular clusters house a population of compact binaries that will be interesting gravitational wave sources for LISA. We provide estimates for the numbers of sources of several categories and discuss the sensitivity of LISA to detecting these sources. The estimated total number of detectable sources ranges from ∼ 10 to ∼ 103 with gravitational wave frequencies above 1mHz. These sources are typ...
