چکیده

Tuberculous Pleural effusion is one of the most frequent causes of exudates in large series of pleural effusions in immunocompetent patients. The Aim of this study is to estimate enzyme Alkaline Phosphatase levels in serum and pleural fluids of HIV seronegative exudative Tuberculous Pleural fluids and their possible role in the diagnosis of tubercular pleural effusion. Serum and Pleural fluid samples were collected from symptomatic cases of pleural effusion, with known HIV status negative and also from Non Tuberculous pleural effusion patients attending General medicine and TB and Chest Department of Government Medical College and Hospital at Ananthapuram for one year. Alkaline phosphatase was estimated by p-Nitrophenol method kinetic. The Mean value of serum and pleural fluid alkaline phosphatase among HIV negative patients with tuberculous effusion was 95.7±51.3 and 83.5±36.9 respectively. Alkaline phosphatase was also assessed among serum and pleural fluid of non-tuberculous pleural effusion patients and the mean value of serum ALKP was 140.96±54.5 and pleural fluid ALKP was 140.4±38.9. Serum alkaline phosphatase levels were not of significant p value in this study. Earlier studies on alkaline phosphatase were also of not any significance in the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusion.

from nontuberculous effusions by measuring pleural adenosine deaminase (ADA),4’ lysozyme (LZ),6 and interferon-gamma (IFG)7; these biochemical compounds are elevated in tuberculous effusions depending on the size of the effusion, although there is an overlap in the pleural concentrations of ADA and LZ.3 We reasoned that the pleural alkaline phosphatase concentration would be a useful means of d...

Th1 and Th2 Cytokine Profiles in Malignant Pleural Effusion

Background: The alteration of Th1 and Th2 cytokine levels is the subject of controversy in pleural effusions caused by malignancy, a situation that favors a Th2 immune response. Objective: To examine the different levels of IL-4 and IL-10 (Th2 cytokines), and IL-2 and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) (Th1 cytokines) in malignant and non-malignant pleural effusions. Method: The cytokine levels in pleural fl...

Background and purpose: Pleural effusion is a common finding in many pulmonary or extrapulmonary diseases and its analysis is essential for differentiating transudates from exudates. Light's criteria is questioned by some researchers and measuring of cholesterol in pleural effusion is proposed due to its simplicity and low cost. This study evaluates the diagnostic value of pleural fluid chole...

Adenosine deaminase and interferon-gamma in diagnosis of tubercular pleural effusion

Many pleural fluid markers have been evaluated for diagnosis of tubercular pleural effusion, but none has been found to be ideal as they lack in sensitivity or specificity, difficulty in performing or difficult availability etc. Some of these markers include serum CA 125, pleural alkaline phosphatase, pleural fluid Procalcitonin concentration, pleural fluid Interleukin-1, pleural tumor necrosis...

Th1/Th2 Imbalance and Elevated PD-L1 in Pleural Effusion Predict the Risk of Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculous Pleuritis

Background: Patient immune status might be indicative of the variance in bacterial genetics in drug-resistant tuberculous pleuritis and could be used for predicting the risk of multi-drug resistant tuberculous pleuritis (MDR-TB). Objective: To determine the significance of Th2/Th1 ratio and concentration of PD-L1 in the pleural effusions for prediction of MDR-T...
