چکیده

The nonnegative and positive semidefinite (PSD-) ranks are closely connected to the nonnegative and positive semidefinite extension complexities of a polytope, which are the minimal dimensions of linear and SDP programs which represent this polytope. Though some exponential lower bounds on the nonnegative [FMP12] and PSD[LRS15] ranks has recently been proved for the slack matrices of some particular polytopes, there are still no tight bounds for these quantities. We explore some existing bounds on the PSD-rank and prove that they cannot give exponential lower bounds on the extension complexity. Our approach consists in proving that the existing bounds are upper bounded by the polynomials of the regular rank of the matrix, which is equal to the dimension of the polytope (up to an additive constant). As one of the implications, we also retrieve an upper bound on the mutual information of an arbitrary matrix of a joint distribution, based on its regular rank.

Lower bounds on matrix factorization ranks via noncommutative polynomial optimization

We use techniques from (tracial noncommutative) polynomial optimization to formulate hierarchies of semidefinite programming lower bounds on matrix factorization ranks. In particular, we consider the nonnegative rank, the positive semidefinite rank, and their symmetric analogues: the completely positive rank and the completely positive semidefinite rank. We study the convergence properties of o...

Support-based lower bounds for the positive semidefinite rank of a nonnegative matrix

The positive semidefinite rank of a nonnegative (m×n)-matrix S is the minimum number q such that there exist positive semidefinite (q × q)-matrices A1, . . . , Am, B1, . . . , Bn such that S(k, l) = trA∗kBl. The most important lower bound technique on nonnegative rank only uses the zero/nonzero pattern of the matrix. We characterize the power of lower bounds on positive semidefinite rank based ...

Computing Positive Semidefinite Minimum Rank for Small Graphs

Abstract. The positive semidefinite minimum rank of a simple graph G is defined to be the smallest possible rank over all 1 positive semidefinite real symmetric matrices whose ijth entry (for i 6= j) is nonzero whenever {i, j} is an edge in G and is zero 2 otherwise. The computation of this parameter directly is difficult. However, there are a number of known bounding parameters 3 and technique...

Some upper and lower bounds on PSD-rank

Positive semidefinite rank (PSD-rank) is a relatively new quantity with applications to combinatorial optimization and communication complexity. We first study several basic properties of PSD-rank, and then develop new techniques for showing lower bounds on the PSD-rank. All of these bounds are based on viewing a positive semidefinite factorization of a matrix M as a quantum communication proto...

Bounds on entanglement dimensions and quantum graph parameters via noncommutative polynomial optimization

In this paper we study bipartite quantum correlations using techniques from tracial polynomial optimization. We construct a hierarchy of semidefinite programming lower bounds on the minimal entanglement dimension of a bipartite correlation. This hierarchy converges to a new parameter: the minimal average entanglement dimension, which measures the amount of entanglement needed to reproduce a qua...
