On the molecular diffusion coefficients of dissolved CO 2 ; HCO 3 , and CO 2 3 and their dependence on isotopic mass

چکیده
The molecular diffusion coefficients of dissolved carbon dioxide ðCO2Þ, bicarbonate ion ðHCO 3 Þ, and carbonate ion ðCO 3 Þ are fundamental physico-chemical constants and are of practical significance in various disciplines including geochemistry, biology, and medicine. Yet, very little experimental data is available, for instance, on the bicarbonate and carbonate ion diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, it appears that no information was hitherto available on the mass-dependence of the diffusion coefficients of the ionic carbonate species in water. Here I use molecular dynamics simulations to study the diffusion of the dissolved carbonate species in water, including their dependence on temperature and isotopic mass. Based on the simulations, I provide equations to calculate the diffusion coefficients of dissolved CO2;HCO 3 , and CO 2 3 over the temperature range from 0 to 100 C. The results indicate a mass-dependence of CO2 diffusion that is consistent with the observed CO2= CO2 diffusion ratio at 25 C. No significant isotope fractionation appears to be associated with the diffusion of the naturally occurring isotopologues of HCO 3 and CO 2 3 at 25 C. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Diffusion of carbon dioxide through lipid bilayer membranes. Effects of carbonic anhydrase, bicarbonate, and unstirred layers
Diffusion of (14)C-labeled CO(2) was measured through lipid bilayer membranes composed of egg lecithin and cholesterol (1:1 mol ratio) dissolved in n-decane. The results indicate that CO(2), but not HCO(3-), crosses the membrane and that different steps in the transport process are rate limiting under different conditions. In one series of experiments we studied one-way fluxes between identical...
متن کاملProducts of the Self-Reaction of HCO Radicals: Theoretical Kinetics Studies
The mechanism of the self-reaction of HCO radicals is investigated by using high-level quantum-chemical methods including M05-2X, CCSD, CCSD(T) and CRCC(2,3). Next, the rate coefficients for several product channels as a function of pressure and temperature are computed by employing statistical rate theories. Four important product channels are predicted to be CO + CO + H2, HCOH + OH, cis-(HCO)...
متن کاملTwo Systems for Concentrating CO(2) and Bicarbonate during Photosynthesis by Scenedesmus.
Scenedesmus cells grown on high CO(2), when adapted to air levels of CO(2) for 4 to 6 hours in the light, formed two concentrating processes for dissolved inorganic carbon: one for utilizing CO(2) from medium of pH 5 to 8 and one for bicarbonate accumulation from medium of pH 7 to 11. Similar results were obtained with assays by photosynthetic O(2) evolution or by accumulation of dissolved inor...
متن کاملSimultaneous Transport of CO(2) and HCO(3) by the Cyanobacterium Synechococcus UTEX 625.
A mass spectrometer was used to simultaneously follow the time course of photosynthetic O(2) evolution and CO(2) depletion of the medium by cells of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus leopoliensis UTEX 625. Analysis of the data indicated that both CO(2) and HCO(3) (-) were simultaneously and continuously transported by the cells as a source of substrate for photosynthesis. Initiation of HCO(3) (-...
متن کاملHigh Affinity Transport of CO(2) in the Cyanobacterium Synechococcus UTEX 625.
The active transport of CO(2) in Synechococcus UTEX 625 was measured by mass spectrometry under conditions that preclude HCO(3) (-) transport. The substrate concentration required to give one half the maximum rate for whole cell CO(2) transport was determined to be 0.4 +/- 0.2 micromolar (mean +/- standard deviation; n = 7) with a range between 0.2 and 0.66 micromolar. The maximum rates of CO(2...
