چکیده

The maximum constraint satisfaction problem (Max CSP) is the following computational problem: an instance is a nite collection of constraints on a set of variables, and the goal is to assign values to the variables that maximises the number of satis ed constraints. Max CSP captures many well-known problems (such as Max k-SAT and Max Cut) and so is NP-hard in general. It is natural to study how restrictions on the allowed constraint types (or constraint language) affect the complexity and approximability of Max CSP. All constraint languages, for which the CSP problem (i.e., the problem of deciding whether all constraints in an instance can be simultaneously satis ed) is currently known to be NP-hard, have a certain algebraic property, and it has been conjectured that CSP problems are tractable for all other constraint languages. We prove that any constraint language with this algebraic property makes Max CSP hard at gap location 1, thus ruling out the existence of a polynomial-time approximation scheme for such problems. We then apply this result to Max CSP restricted to a single constraint type. We show that, unless P = NP, such problems either are trivial or else do not admit polynomial-time approximation schemes. All our hardness results hold even if the number of occurrences of each variable is bounded by a constant.

Polynomial time approximation schemes for dense instances of minimum constraint satisfaction

It is known that large fragments of the class of dense Minimum Constraint Satisfaction (MIN-CSP) problems do not have polynomial time approximation schemes (PTASs) contrary to their Maximum Constraint Satisfaction analogs. In this paper we prove, somewhat surprisingly, that the minimum satisfaction of dense instances of kSAT-formulas, and linear equations mod 2, Ek-LIN2, do have PTASs for any k...

The Approximability of Some NP-hard Problems Thesis proposal

An α-approximation algorithm is an algorithm guaranteed to output a solution that is within an α ratio of the optimal solution. We are interested in the following question: Given an NP-hard optimization problem, what is the best approximation guarantee that any polynomial time algorithm could achieve? We mostly focus on studying the approximability of two classes of NP-hard problems: Constraint...

Approximation Complexity of Complex-Weighted Degree-Two Counting Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Constraint satisfaction problems have been studied in numerous fields with practical and theoretical interests. In recent years, major breakthroughs have been made in a study of counting constraint satisfaction problems (or #CSPs). In particular, a computational complexity classification of bounded-degree #CSPs has been discovered for all degrees except for two, where the “degree” of an input i...

Universal Factor Graphs for Every NP-Hard Boolean CSP

An instance of a Boolean constraint satisfaction problem can be divided into two parts. One part, that we refer to as the factor graph of the instance, specifies for each clause the set of variables that are associated with the clause. The other part, specifies for each of the given clauses what is the constraint that is evaluated on the respective variables. Depending on the allowed choices of...

Some New Randomized Approximation Algorithms

The topic of this thesis is approximation algorithms for optimization versions of NP-complete decision problems. No exact algorithms with sub-exponential running times are known for these problems, and therefore approximation algorithms with polynomial running times are studied. An approximation algorithm does not necessarily nd the optimal solution, but it leaves a guarantee of how far from th...
