ISSN 0001-5555 Acne appears to represent a visible indicator disease of over-activated mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signalling, an unfavour able metabolic deviation on the road to serious common Western diseases of civilisation associated with increased body mass index and insulin resistance. Exaggerated mTORC1 signalling by Western diet explains the association of acne with increased body mass index, insulin resistance, and early onset of menarche. Both, a high glycaemic load and increased consumption of milk and milk products, staples of Western diet, aggravate mTORC1 signalling. This review of the literature summarises present evidence for an association between acne, increased body mass index, insulin resistance and Western diet. By dietary intervention with a Palaeolithic-type diet, the dermatologist has the chance to attenuate patients’ increased mTORC1 signalling by reducing glycaemic load and milk consumption, which may not only improve acne but may delay the march to more serious mTORC1-driven diseases of civilisation.

The Relationship between Acne Severity and Body Mass Index in Females

Introduction: Acne is one of the most common diseases in dermatology. It has been claimed that acne and weight gain are clinical markers of hyperandrogenism, and it seems that obesity is associated with increased responsiveness to androgenic hormones and acne severity. This investigation may aid in finding the possible relationship between severity of acne and Body Mass Index (BMI) in order to ...

Effects of hyperandrogenism and high body mass index on acne severity in women.

OBJECTIVES To determine the association between hyperandrogenism and obesity with acne, and correlation between the severity of acne with the clinical and laboratory parameters of hyperandrogenism. METHODS One hundred and forty-one female with acne vulgaris and 73 healthy women were included in this study. The correlation of clinical and laboratory signs of hyperandrogenism and the severity o...

Endocrine factors in pre- and postmenopausal women with hidradenitis suppurativa.

The relationship between hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and hyperandrogenism is largely based on the finding of an increased free androgen index due to a low sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). As SHBG is now believed to be regulated by factors that influence body weight, and previous studies were not controlled for body weight, we have re-evaluated the androgen status of female patients with H...

Effects of isotretinoin on body mass index, serum adiponectin, leptin, and ghrelin levels in acne vulgaris patients

INTRODUCTION Isotretinoin has been successfully used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. AIM To investigate the effects of isotretinoin on body mass index (BMI), to determine whether isotretinoin causes any changes in serum adiponectin, leptin, and ghrelin levels in acne vulgaris patients, and to correlate variables. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-two patients were included in this study. Oral...
