Relaxation calorimetry technique for measuring low temperature specific heat
نویسندگان
چکیده
A rudimentary calorimeter was constructed to measure the temperature dependence of the specific heat of a 10 m thick ~0.62 mg! copolymer film of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene in the previously unexplored vicinity of 6 K. The data were processed with the algorithm developed by Hwang et al. @Rev. Sci. Instrum. 68, 94 ~1997!# as modified for our configuration in which a Cernox thermometer also served as a heater. The measurements extended from 3.75 to 8.5 K, with a temperature resolution of 0.2 K, and the ratios of the statistical uncertainties to the mean values deduced for cp are 6 3% over most of this temperature range. The data taken with the intermediate resolution of this calorimeter provides evidence for the absence of any slowly varying anomaly in the temperature dependence of cp . Such rudimentary systems provide a useful option to gather exploratory information at a comparatively low cost for components. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1633989#

A conceptual approach for noncontact calorimetry in space
A concept is developed and described which allows to measure the heat capacity and the effective thermal conductivity of stable and undercooled liquid metals and alloys in an electromagnetic levitation apparatus. We propose to use an ac pulse heating method which is used nowadays as a standard technique for precision measurement of low temperature heat capacities. The ideal process parameters i...
متن کاملHeat Capacity and Thermodynamic Properties of Poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene) from 2.5 to 620 K
Heat capacities and thermodynamic properties of a number of poly(chlorotrifluoToethylene) samples subjected to various thermal treatments, to achieve crystallinities ranging from approximately 10 to 90%, have been studied from 2.5 to 370 K by automated adiabatic calorimetiy and from 250 to 620 K by differential scanning calorimetry. Small heat capacity discontinuities in the temperature range f...
متن کاملThermodynamics of small systems by nanocalorimetry: from physical to biological nano-objects
Membrane based nanocalorimeters have been developed for ac calorimetry experiments. It has allowed highly sensitive measurements of heat capacity from solid state physics to complex systems like polymers and proteins. In this article we review what has been developed in ac calorimetry toward the measurement of very small systems. Firstly, at low temperature ac calorimetry using silicon membrane...

متن کاملac-Calorimetry at High Pressure and Low Temperature
Recent developments of the ac-calorimetric technique adapted for the needs of high pressure experiments are discussed. A semi-quantitative measurement of the specific heat with a Bridgman-type of pressure cell as well as a diamond anvil cell is possible in the temperature range 0.1 K< T < 10 K. The pressure transmitting medium used to ensure good pressure conditions determines to a great extent...
