The memoir which prefaces the volume shews that Dr. John Daviea Thomas was a constant and diligent worker, and a man of whom the profession of medicine have cause to be proud. His special opportunities for studying hydatid disease render this work perhaps the most valuable on the subject. The value of the work is greatly euhauced by the copious references to cases and by the Bibliography placed at the commencement of each section. As a warning to the careless we quote Dr. Thomas' statement that " as regards the causes of suppuration [in hydatid cysts], the most frequent is probably treatment by tapping operations, especially when aseptic instruments have not been employed."
