چکیده

Formocresol is currently the most popular agent for performing pulpotomies on primary teeth. HistOl'3gical evaluation offonnocresol-treated pu'.... tissue reveals inflammation and necrosis.4 ,5,6,8,11.1S Formocresol has been demonstrated to be toxic to connective tissue.16•18 In vitro, formaldehyde will diffuse through the apical foramen within minutes after placing formocresol in the root canal. 1 9 In spite of these findings, formocresol remains popular because of its high incidence of clinical success.l ·9 In a study using Rhesus monkeys, 14C_ formaldehyde was found to be absorbed into the systemic circulation within minutes after performing a formocresol pulpotomy.20 The volume of distribution of the 14C-formaldehyde was larger than the volume of the monkeys, suggesting that either tissue binding or metabolic breakdown of the 14C-formaldehyde occurred.20 The purpose of this study was to determine the fate of the 14C-formaldehyde which is absorbed following its application to pulpotomy sites.

Do we still need formocresol in pediatric dentistry?

Most pediatric dentists in the United Kingdom and North America1,2 use formocresol pulpotomy for vital primary pulp therapy. In the United Kingdom, 54% of pediatric dentists reported concerns about possible sensitization, toxic, mutagenic or carcinogenic effects of formocresol; 42% of specialists surveyed in 2002 were considering changing their pulp technique to avoid formocresol.1 We performed...

Tissue changes induced by the absorption of formocresol from pulpotomy sites in dogs.

Formocresol applied to vital pulp tissue is absorbed systemically and distributed throughout the body. The sites of injury and the systemic effects of the intravenous administration of high doses of formocresol have been determined. The purpose of this project was to determine whether cellular injury could be detected following formocresol application to vital pulp tissue. Five dogs were anesth...

The effect of alternatives to formocresol on antigenicity of proteins.

As part of an overall evaluation of possible substitutes for the pulpotomy agent formocresol, this study was initiated to compare the antigenicity of the reaction products of protein with formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, or dimethylsuberimidate (DMS). Rabbits were injected with rabbit serum albumin (RSA) which had been treated with one of the following solutions: phosphate-buffered saline, 2% glut...

Systemic absorption of 14C-glutaraldehyde from glutaraldehyde-treated pulpotomy sites.

The purpose of this research was to measure the. systemic absorption and distribution of glutaraldehyde from pulpotomy sites in dogs. Pulpotomies were performed on the incisors and canines of 5 mongrel dogs. A cotton pellet containing 20 ~1 of 2.5% "4C-(1,5) glutaraldehyde with an activity 6.25 x 105 dpm/~l was placed in each pulpotomy site for 5 rain. Whole blood samples, urine, and expired ai...

Comparison of the cytotoxicity of formocresol, formaldehyde, cresol, and glutaraldehyde using human pulp fibroblast cultures.

Serial dilution and agar overlay techniques were used to compare the cytotoxicity of formocresol, 19% formaldehyde, 35% cresol, and 2.5% glutaraldehyde to human pulp fibroblasts. The maximum nontoxic concentration of each agent was determined to allow quantitative comparisons both of the agents tested and of the techniques used. Formaldehyde was found to be the major component of formocresol wh...
