User Study of a Spanish-language ClinicalTrials.gov Prototype System
نویسندگان
چکیده
We conducted a user study of monolingual and bilingual Spanish-speaking consumers (n=36) to evaluate a Spanish-language ClinicalTrials.gov prototype. The prototype leverages an existing English-only consumer health resource by combining (1) Spanish-English cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) and (2) English-Spanish document display techniques. We collected user feedback on expectations, usability, and satisfaction. Preliminary results suggest improved online information access by Spanish-speakers. The goal is to develop a general approach for other systems and languages.

Supporting Access to Consumer Health Information Across Languages
Access to high-quality online consumer health information is frequently a barrier for non-English speakers and speakers of English as a foreign language. One strategy is to leverage existing Englishlanguage systems. In this case study, we present mechanisms developed, designed, and implemented to support access by Spanish speakers to ClinicalTrials.gov. First, we briefly introduce the underlyin...

The predominance of English-only online health information poses a serious challenge to non-English speakers. To overcome this barrier, we incorporated cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) techniques into a fully functional prototype. It supports Spanish language searches over an English data set using a Spanish-English bilingual term list (BTL). The modular design allows for system and ...

QUILT (Query User Interface with Light Translations) is prototype implementation of a complete cross-language text retrieval system that takes English queries and produces English gloss translations of Spanish documents.
