Towards a Clinical Stereoscopic Augmented Reality System for Laparoscopic Surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe our development of a complete real-time stereoscopic augmented reality system that overlays laparoscopic ultrasound (LUS) images on stereoscopic laparoscopic video for conventional laparoscopic surgery. The system was designed and developed to achieve near-term clinical evaluation as a primary goal. Special consideration was paid to system interactivity, accuracy and easy integration within the existing clinical workflow. Custom-designed fixtures for the two imaging devices were created to avoid their recalibration in the operating room and thus to minimize setup time. The system was assembled on a rolling cart to make it portable for the use in the operating room. Utilizing our optimized design and hardware-accelerated implementation, the system achieved a low system latency of approximately 150 ms. The LUS image-tovideo registration accuracy, measured in terms of target registration accuracy and recorded separately for the left and right eye channels of the stereoscopic camera, was 2.38±1.15 mm and 3.66±1.42 mm.

Evaluation of Electromagnetic Tracking for Stereoscopic Augmented Reality Laparoscopic Visualization
Without the requirement of line-of-sight, electromagnetic (EM) tracking is increasingly studied and used in clinical applications. We designed experiments to evaluate a commercial EM tracking system in three situations: using the EM sensor by itself; fixing the sensor onto the handle of a stereoscopic (i.e., 3D) laparoscope; and placing the sensor on the outside surface of the head of a laparos...

متن کاملStereoscopic augmented reality using ultrasound volume rendering for laparoscopic surgery in children
In laparoscopic surgery, live video provides visualization of the exposed organ surfaces in the surgical field, but is unable to show internal structures beneath those surfaces. The laparoscopic ultrasound is often used to visualize the internal structures, but its use is limited to intermittent confirmation because of the need for an extra hand to maneuver the ultrasound probe. Other limitatio...
متن کاملTowards Endoscopic Augmented Reality for Robotically Assisted Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
One of the problems tightly linked to endoscopic surgery is the fact that, because of the narrow field of view, it is sometimes quite difficult to locate the objects that can be seen through the endoscope. This is especially true in cardiac surgery, where it is difficult to not confuse two coronary arteries on a beating heart. We propose in this paper a methodology to achieve coronary localisat...
متن کاملApplication of Augmented Reality to Laparoscopic Surgery
The usefulness and feasibility of an augmented reality visualization system for laparoscopic surgery is examined. This technology could enable physicians to see data, such as medical images, as well as the patient’s 3-D anatomy, in the context of the patient rather than viewing a 2-D video monitor. Three new results will be presented: 1. A study whose chief findings were that augmented reality ...
