چکیده

Painterly rendering (non-photorealistic rendering or NPR) aims at translating photographs into paintings with discrete brush strokes, simulating certain techniques (imor expressionism) and media (oil or watercolour). Recently, our research into visual perception and models of processes in the visual cortex resulted in a new rendering scheme, in which detected lines and edges at different scales are translated into brush strokes of different sizes. In order to prepare a version which is suitable for many users, including children, the design of the interface in terms of window and menu system is very important. Discussions with artists and non-artists led to three design criteria: (1) the interface must reflect the procedures and possibilities that real painters follow and use, (2) it must be based on only one window, and (3) the menu system must be very simple, avoiding a jungle of menus and sub-menus. This paper explains the interface that has been developed.

Stereo-based Image and Video Analysis for Multimedia Applications

In this paper we utilize stereo images and video frames of real scenes to automatically generate artistic stereoscopic views with a hand-painted appearance (“painterly rendering”). The approach is motivated by contemporary artists who painted stereo image pairs on canvases. Although a variety of monoscopic painterly rendering algorithms have been proposed in the literature, the design of painte...

Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques to Emulate the Creativity of a Portrait Painter

We present three new machine learning based artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, which we have added to our parameterized computational painterly rendering framework and show their benefits in computational creativity and non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) of portraits. Traditional portrait artists use a specific but open human creativity, vision, technical and perception methodologies to c...

Adaptive Parameter Control for Image Moment-based Painterly Rendering

The nonphotorealistic rendering is recognized as one of the major topics in the recent computer graphics society. The general issue in this research area is achieving methods for imitating the artists’ rendering styles, such as oil-paintings, technical illustration, etc. The painterly rendering is one of the nonphotorealstic rendering methods dealing with the effects as the oil-paintings. It is...

Supervised Genetic Search for Parameter Selection in Painterly Rendering

This paper investigates the feasibility of evolutionary search techniques as a mechanism for interactively exploring the design space of 2D painterly renderings. Although a growing body of painterly rendering literature exists, the large number of low-level configurable parameters that feature in contemporary algorithms can be counter-intuitive for non-expert users to set. In this paper we firs...

Fluid Simulation as a Tool for Painterly Animation

In this paper we combine recent work from two different subfields of computer graphics: semi-Lagrangian fluid simulation and painterly rendering. We have implemented a painterly rendering system in which users can select regions of an image in which a fluid field will be used to inform the placement and rendering of brush strokes, and thus generate renderings which include long curved strokes t...
