چکیده

Vertically well-aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with uniform diameters ( 15 nm) were grown on catalytic probes at high yield rates in an inverse diffusion flame (IDF) of a co-flow jet configuration using methane as fuel. Varied parameters investigated included: alloy composition (e.g. Fe, Ni/Cu, Ni/Cr/Fe), sampling positions within the flame structure, and voltage bias applied to the probe substrate. Spontaneous Raman spectroscopy was utilized to determine the local gas-phase temperature, as well as the concentrations of carbon-based precursor species (e.g. CO, C2H2) within the flame structure at specific locations of carbon nanotube (CNT) growth during synthesis. The variation of the aforementioned parameters strongly affects CNT formation, diameter, growth rate, and morphology. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Synthesis of carbon nanotubes on Ni-alloy and Si-substrates using counterflow methane–air diffusion flames

We have conducted an experimental study to investigate the synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in counterflow methane–air diffusion flames, with emphasis on effects of catalyst, temperature, and the air-side strain rate of the flow on CNTs growth. The counterflow flame was formed by fuel (CH4 or CH4 + N2) and air streams impinging on each other. Two types of substrates were used t...

Carbon nanotube synthesis on catalytic metal alloys in methane/air counterflow diffusion flames

Various morphologies of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are grown catalytically on metalalloy probes in counterflow diffusion flames using methane as fuel. Carbon nanotube (CNT) properties and morphologies are investigated as functions of local gas-phase temperatures, C-related species concentrations (e.g. C2H2, CO), sampling positions, C2H2 adding to the fuel, and metal-alloy composition...

Enhanced Synthesis of Carbon Nanomaterials Using Acoustically Excited Methane Diffusion Flames

Acoustically modulated methane jet diffusion flames were used to enhance carbon nanostructure synthesis. A catalytic nickel substrate was employed to collect the deposit materials at sampling position z = 10 mm above the burner exit. The fabrication of carbon nano-onions (CNOs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was significantly enhanced by acoustic excitation at frequencies near the natural flickeri...

Single step process for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes and metal/alloy-filled multiwalled carbon nanotubes

A single-step approach for the synthesis of multi-walled nanotubes (MWNT) filled with nanowires of Ni/ternary Zr based hydrogen storage alloy has been illustrated. We also demonstrate the generation of COfree hydrogen by methane decomposition over alloy hydride catalyst. The present work also highlights the formation of single-walled nanotubes (SWNT) and MWNTs at varying process conditions. The...
