چکیده

Modern food animal production depends in large part on the use of antibiotics for disease control and growth promotion. This practice has left many in Denmark concerned about its potential effect on the efficacy of these important drugs. In 1969, the Swann committee recommended that those antibiotics used for the treatment of infections in animals and humans not be used as growth promoters, a policy that was partly adopted by the European Union as a whole. Still, during the early 1990s more antibiotics were used to promote growth than to treat infections in Denmark. During this same time, researchers at the Danish Veterinary Laboratory noticed an increase in the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance among bacteria causing infections in animals. Following this, and the discovery in 1994 and 1995 that the use of the glycopeptide avoparcin for growth promotion was associated with the occurrence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), Danish authorities implemented a number of initiatives. Among them has been the establishment of an integrated surveillance program, including an effort to monitor the use of antimicrobials in food animal production. The Danish Integrated Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring Program (DANMAP) for surveillance was established in 1995. Information gathered has formed the basis of practical recommendations for veterinary use of antimicrobial agents, and the use of Antibiotic Use in Food-Animal Production in Denmark

Restrictions on antimicrobial use in food animal production: an international regulatory and economic survey

BACKGROUND The administration of antimicrobial drugs to food animals at low doses for extended durations for growth promotion and disease prevention has been linked to the global health crisis of antimicrobial resistance. Internationally, multiple jurisdictions have responded by restricting antimicrobial use for these purposes, and by requiring a veterinary prescription to use these drugs in fo...

The Food Production Environment and the Development of Antimicrobial Resistance in Human Pathogens of Animal Origin

Food-borne pathogens are a serious human health concern worldwide, and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant food pathogens has further confounded this problem. Once-highly-efficacious antibiotics are gradually becoming ineffective against many important pathogens, resulting in severe treatment crises. Among several reasons for the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance, their overu...

The Potential Use of Essential Oil Nanoemulsion as a Novel Alternative to Antibiotics in Poultry Production-A Review

Antibiotics are commonly used due to their antimicrobial activity and widely used for promoting growth, preventing diseases or therapy in poultry. The misuse of antibiotics in livestock production induces resistant bacteria into the environment. Therefore, the need to develop alternatives to antibiotics become increasingly important, that protect and improve global public health. The phytobioti...

Historic perspective: prebiotics, probiotics, and other alternatives to antibiotics.

Applications of antimicrobials in food production and human health have found favor throughout human history. Antibiotic applications in agricultural and human medical arenas have resulted in tremendous increases in food animal production and historically unprecedented gains in human health protection. Successes attributed to widespread antibiotic use have been accompanied by the inadvertent em...

Antibiotic growth promoters.

Sir, I was dismayed to see that Phillips et al. were defending what nearly all microbiologists know are grave abuses of antibiotics— their continuous use in feed as growth promoters and the needless widespread use of broad spectrum agents (fluoroquinolones). This is despite their acknowledgement that ‘the more an antibiotic is used, the more likely are resistant populations to develop’ and that...
