Wall Projections in the Sporophyte and Gametophyte of Sphaerocarpos
نویسنده
چکیده
The nutrition of the sporophyte in Sphaerocarpos and liverworts in general has long been controversial . It has not yet been determined whether the chloroplasts in the sporophyte capsule do, in fact, photosynthesize or whether the carbohydrates stored as starch are translocated to the sporophyte from the gametophyte which is known to be photosynthetic and to which the sporophyte remains attached throughout its development . Although movement of carbohydrates from the gametophyte to the sporophyte has not been shown, this has long been thought to occur . It is the purpose of this report to describe the nature of the juncture between the sporophyte and gametophyte of Sphaerocarpos donnellii Aust ., with particular emphasis on specialized wall protuberances found in this region . The possible significance of these protuberances in translocation and their relationship to similar structures found in other plants will be discussed .

Bryophytes, the most basal of the extant land plants, diverged at least 450 million years ago. A major feature of these plants is the biphasic alternation of generations between a dominant haploid gametophyte and a minor diploid sporophyte phase. These dramatic differences in form and function occur in a constant genetic background, raising the question of whether the switch from gametophyte-to...
متن کاملThe Diversity of the Pollen Tube Pathway in Plants: Toward an Increasing Control by the Sporophyte
Plants, unlike animals, alternate multicellular diploid, and haploid generations in their life cycle. While this is widespread all along the plant kingdom, the size and autonomy of the diploid sporophyte and the haploid gametophyte generations vary along evolution. Vascular plants show an evolutionary trend toward a reduction of the gametophyte, reflected both in size and lifespan, together wit...
متن کاملGenerating autotetraploid sporophytes and their use in analyzing mutations affecting gametophyte development in the fern Ceratopteris.
The haploid gametophytes of the fern Ceratopteris richardii are autotrophic and develop independently of the diploid sporophyte plant. While haploid genetics is useful for screening and characterizing mutations affecting gametophyte development in Ceratopteris, it is difficult to assess whether a gametophytic mutation is dominant or recessive or to determine allelism by complementation analysis...
متن کاملMarchantia MpRKD Regulates the Gametophyte-Sporophyte Transition by Keeping Egg Cells Quiescent in the Absence of Fertilization
Unlike in animals, the life cycle of land plants alternates between two multicellular generations, the haploid gametophyte and the diploid sporophyte [1]. Gamete differentiation initiates the transition from the gametophyte to the sporophyte generation and, upon maturation, the egg cell establishes a quiescent state that is maintained until fertilization. This quiescence represents a hallmark o...
متن کاملThe Ovule and the Embryo Sac.
The plant life cycle is characterized by the alternation of generations between a diploid sporophyte and a haploid gametophyte. The sporophyte functions to produce spores, which then develop into gametophytes. The differentiated gametophytes in turn produce either the male gametes (sperm) or female gametes (egg cells). In contrast to lower plant species, in which the gametophyte is the dominant...
