On Temperature and Abundance Effects During an X-Ray Flare on σ Geminorum

چکیده
We compare quiescent and flare X-ray spectra of the RS CVn binary σ Gem obtained with the Chandra and XMMNewton grating spectrometers. We find that in addition to an overall 25% flux increase, which can be ascribed to variations in the system’s quiescence activity over the 15 months that passed between the observations, there is a hot plasma component of kTe >∼ 3 keV that arises with the flare. The hot component is manifested primarily by emission from high charge states of Fe and by a vast continuum. The cooler (kTe <∼ 2 keV) plasma remains undisturbed during the flare. We find no significant variations in the relative abundances during the flare except for a slight decrease (< 30%) of O and Ne.

The X-ray active RS CVn binary system σ Gemino-rum was observed during a long-duration flare with XMM-Newton. We compare line emission during the flare with line emission measured from a previous Chandra observation during quiescence, in a model independent way. The RSCVn system σ Geminorum was observed by XMM-Newton on April 2001 during a large flare. We model the emission measure distribution (EMD) during the flare and during a quiescence period. In the flare, a two phase behaviour is found in which the cool plasma (kT < 2 keV) is not disturbed while a large hot component , at temperatues of kT > 3 keV emerges. Fundamental limitations on EMD modeling...
متن کاملDetection of the Neupert Effect in the Corona of an RS CVn Binary System by XMM-Newton and the VLA
The RS CVn-type binary σ Geminorum was observed during a large, longduration flare simultaneously with XMM-Newton and the VLA. The light curves show a characteristic time dependence that is compatible with the Neupert effect observed in solar flares: The time derivative of the X-ray light curve resembles the radio light curve. This observation can be interpreted in terms of a standard flare sce...
متن کاملROSAT observations of the RSCVn binary σ Geminorum
X-ray observations of the RSCVn system σGeminorumhave been undertakenwith theROSATobservatory. Several spectra of very good signal-to-noise ratio were obtained. Spectral fitting using metal abundances amounting to 50% of solar values reveal two temperature components at 2MK and 12MK. Previous EXOSAT observations showed another component at 40 MK. Particular interest is focused on the temporal v...
متن کاملX-ray Fluorescent Fe Kα Lines from Stellar Photospheres
X-ray spectra from stellar coronae are reprocessed by the underlying photosphere through scattering and photoionization events. While reprocessed X-ray spectra reaching a distant observer are at a flux level of only a few percent of that of the corona itself, characteristic lines formed by inner shell photoionization of some abundant elements can be significantly stronger. The emergent photosph...
