چکیده

apparently on the basis of an unsubstantiated report (1). Li et al.’s data confirm that horseshoe bats are a reservoir for a coronavirus related to SARS-CoV found in humans and the virus isolated from palm civets, but this does not make them the reservoir for SARS-CoV. Dobson’s linking of bats to emerging diseases caused by Ebola and Marburg viruses is speculative and does not agree with published literature [e.g., (2)]. The assertion that direct transfer of Nipah virus from bats to humans occurred in Bangladesh and that human consumption of the pulp of fruit mouthed by bats is a route of these infections is not supported by the paper Dobson cited [i.e., (3)]. Ejected pellets of fruit bats consist of indigestible (by the bats) fiber and seeds with little nutritional value for animals (e.g., palm civets) unable to digest cellulose. Insectivorous bats cull indigestible insect parts, but we know of no evidence that this contaminates culled parts with bat saliva, let alone viruses. People must be concerned about SARS and other emerging infectious diseases and the roles that bats and other animals may play in their epidemiology. When public health is the focus, however, those concerned for conservation of wildlife (including bats) must insist on careful consideration of documented facts rather than speculation and unsubstantiated statements. Coronavirus Antibodies in African Bat Species

Asian bats have been identified as potential reservoir hosts of coronaviruses associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV). We detected antibody reactive with SARS-CoV antigen in 47 (6.7%) of 705 bat serum specimens comprising 26 species collected in Africa; thus, African bats may harbor agents related to putative group 4 CoV.

Notes on Bats from Montserrat (Lesser Antilles) with Comments Concerning the Effects of Hurricane Hugo

— From August 1993 to August 1994, bats were surveyed on Montserrat, Lesser Antilles. Four years after this small volcanic island was struck by Hurricane Hugo (1989), there remains a 20-fold decrease in bat populations as compared to levels before Hugo. After the hurricane, composition of the community shifted from smaller frugivorous species to one of more omnivorous and larger frugivorous spe...

Detection of Group 1 Coronaviruses in Bats in North America

The epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was caused by a newly emerged coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Bats of several species in southern People's Republic of China harbor SARS-like CoVs and may be reservoir hosts for them. To determine whether bats in North America also harbor coronaviruses, we used reverse transcription-PCR to detect coronavirus RNA in bats. We found coronavirus RNA ...

Detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus nucleocapsid protein in sars patients by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

We report the development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus (CoV) nucleocapsid protein. The assay was carried out with hyperimmune polyclonal nucleocapsid-specific antibodies from guinea pigs and rabbits immunized with recombinant His(6)-tagged SARS CoV nucleocapsid protein. The assay was used for the detect...

The SARS-like coronaviruses: the role of bats and evolutionary relationships with SARS coronavirus.

Bats represent an order of great evolutionary success, with elevated geographical diffusion and species diversity. This order harbors viruses of high variability which have a great possibility of acquiring the capacity of infecting other animals, including humans. Bats are the natural reservoir for several viruses genetically closely related to the SARScoronavirus which is the etiological agent ...
