Comparison of three nonlinear seizure prediction methods by means of the seizure prediction characteristic

چکیده
Epilepsy is characterized by the spontaneous and unforeseeable occurrence of seizures, during which the perception or behavior of patients is disturbed. The predictability of these seizures would render novel therapeutic approaches possible. Several prediction methods have claimed to be able to predict seizures based on EEG recordings minutes in advance. However, the term seizure prediction is not unequivocally defined, different criteria to assess prediction methods exist, and only little attention has been paid to issues of sensitivity and false prediction rate. We introduce an assessment criterion called the seizure prediction characteristic that incorporates the assessment of sensitivity and false prediction rate. Within this framework, three nonlinear seizure prediction methods were evaluated on a large EEG data pool of 21 patients. Altogether, 582 h intracranial EEG data and 88 seizures were examined. With a rate of 1–3.6 false predictions per day, the “dynamical similarity index” achieves a sensitivity between 21 and 42%, which was the best result of the three methods. Sensitivity was between 18 and 31% for the extended, prospective version of the “accumulated energy” and between 13 and 30% for the “effective correlation dimension”. These results still are not sufficient for clinical applications. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 05.10.−a; 05.45.Tp; 87.19.La; 89.20.−a

SEIZURE PREDICTION METHODS Assessment and comparison of three methods by means of the seizure prediction characteristic
Several methods have been suggested to predict the onset of epileptic seizures from EEG data. We evaluated the performance of three predictions methods: the “dynamical similarity index”, the “effective correlation dimension” and an extended, prospective version of the “accumulated energy”. These prediction methods were applied on a large pool of intracranial EEG data from 21 patients. Altogethe...
متن کاملThe seizure prediction characteristic: a general framework to assess and compare seizure prediction methods.
The unpredictability of seizures is a central problem for all patients suffering from uncontrolled epilepsy. Recently, numerous methods have been suggested that claim to predict from the EEG the onset of epileptic seizures. In parallel, new therapeutic devices are in development that could control upcoming seizures provided that their onset is known in advance. A reliable clinical application c...
متن کاملSeizure Prediction in Epilepsy and Reaction Diffusion Cellular Nonlinear Networks (RD-CNNs)
The seizure prediction problem has been addressed by many researchers from very different fields for more than three decades. The vision of an implantable seizure prediction device may become reality now: the first clinical study of such a device has been realized very recently and other realizations are not far behind. Despite promising first results, however, up to now there is no method allo...
متن کاملComparison of using Different Modeling Techniques on the Prediction of the Nonlinear Behavior of R/C Shear Walls
Abstract: Reinforced concrete shear walls have been used throughout the world as known resisting elements for the lateral wind and earthquake loads. They are mostly designed and constructed based on elastic calculations and therefore resulting in un-economical sections. In order to overcome this weakness, scientists have proposed different methodologies to account for the non linear behavior of...
متن کاملOptimization and Data Mining in Epilepsy Research: A Review and Perspective
During the past century, most neuroscientists have believed that epileptic seizures began abruptly in a matter of a few seconds before clinical onset. Since the late 80’s, there has been an explosion of interests in neuroscience research to predict epileptic seizures based on quantitative analyses of brain electrical activity captured by electroencephalograms (EEGs). Many research groups have d...
