چکیده

Introduction T h e potential importance of oestrogens as antioxidant cardioprotectants is currently attracting considerable attention. Oestrogen is recognized to have a protective effect against coronary heart disease and its antioxidant action could contribute to the cardiovascular benefits observed on oestrogen administration in postmenopausal women [ 1,2]. This antioxidant-mediated cardioprotective action is likely to be independent of the favourable influence of oestrogen on risk factors such as the plasma lipid profile [l-31. Furthermore oestrogen improves lipid metabolism in the postprandial state: it makes this state less atherogenic by improving the clearance of chylomicron remnants and by attenuating the postprandial decrease in levels of beneficial highdensity lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol [4]. Other beneficial effects of oestrogen include the lower-

The bioavailability of non-nutrient plant factors: dietary flavonoids and phyto-oestrogens.

The bioavailability in human subjects of non-nutrient plant factors, including dietary flavonoids and phyto-oestrogens, is of great importance relative to their reported health protective effects. These effects include protection against heart disease, and also in the case of the phyto-oestrogens, hormone-dependent cancers. Epidemiological studies have shown flavonoid intake (mostly quercetin) ...

Tamoxifen as an antioxidant and cardioprotectant.

Tamoxifen is widely used in the treatment of breast cancer and has been proposed as a prophylactic agent in this disease. Tamoxifen is an effective antioxidant and protects membranes and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles against oxidative damage. This antioxidant action is shared by endogenous and synthetic oestrogens. The ability of tamoxifen to protect LDL particles against the oxidativ...

P2X7 receptor agonists pre- and postcondition the heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury by opening pannexin-1/P2X₇ channels.

Protection of the heart from ischemia-reperfusion injury can be achieved by ischemic preconditioning and ischemic postconditioning. Previous studies revealed that a complex of pannexin-1 with the P2X(7) receptor forms a channel during ischemic preconditioning and ischemic postconditioning that results in the release of endogenous cardioprotectants. ATP binds to P2X(7) receptors, inducing the fo...

Cellular and biochemical mechanisms by which environmental oestrogens influence reproductive function.

The biology and physiology of the male as well as female reproductive system is hormonally regulated. Abnormalities in the dynamics of hormone production, metabolism and elimination, as well as their binding to certain target tissues, has been associated with pathophysiological conditions of the reproductive system. Although oestrogens are known to be one of the major hormone groups in regulati...

Xeno-oestrogens and phyto-oestrogens are alternative ligands for the androgen receptor.

The androgen receptor (AR) plays a critical role in prostate cancer development and progression. This study aimed to use a computerized docking approach to examine the interactions between the human AR and phyto-oestrogens (genistein, daidzein, and flavone) and xeno-oestrogens (bisphenol A, 4-nonylphenol, dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane [DDT], diethylstilbestrol [DES]). The predicted three-dim...
