D-He Proton Spectra for Diagnosing Shell ρR and Fuel Ti of Imploded Capsules at OMEGA

چکیده
Recent work has resulted in the first high-resolution, spectroscopic measurements of energetic charged particles on OMEGA. Energy spectra of charged fusion products have been obtained from two spectrometers, and have been used to deduce various physical quantities in imploded capsules. In this paper we discuss the first use of 14.7-MeV D-He proton spectra for diagnosing shell areal density (ρR) and fuel ion temperature (Ti). For thick-plastic shell capsules, shell areal densities between 20 and 70 mg/cm and ion temperatures between 3 and 5 keV have been determined. The spectral line widths associated with such capsules are found to be clearly wider than the doppler widths. This effect, the focus of future study, is possibly the result of ρR evolution during the burn; or is the result of an extended burn region; or results from nonuniformities in the shell. For thin-glass shell capsules, the spectral line widths are dominated by the doppler width, and ion temperatures between 10 and 15 keV were determined. We also compare and contrast these measurements with the results from neutron measurements and from 1-D hydrodynamic simulations. Secondary D-3He Proton Spectra from D2-Filled OMEGA Targets
130 LLE Review, Volume 83 Introduction Two new diagnostic techniques now provide the first highquality spectra of secondary fusion protons from imploded D2filled capsules in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. The potential utility of secondary neutrons and protons for diagnosing such capsules has been recognized for more than two decades,1–8 but practical use of protons has previous...
متن کاملA technique for extending by ∼10(3) the dynamic range of compact proton spectrometers for diagnosing ICF implosions on the National Ignition Facility and OMEGA.
Wedge Range Filter (WRF) proton spectrometers are routinely used on OMEGA and the NIF for diagnosing ρR and ρR asymmetries in direct- and indirect-drive implosions of D(3)He-, D2-, and DT-gas-filled capsules. By measuring the optical opacity distribution in CR-39 due to proton tracks in high-yield applications, as opposed to counting individual tracks, WRF dynamic range can be extended by 10(2)...

54 LLE Review, Volume 86 Introduction High-gain inertial confinement fusion (ICF) requires uniform compression of a spherical capsule to a state of high density and temperature;1–3 current research is aimed at finding ways to achieve this goal. This article describes how a range of traditional and new nuclear diagnostics are used to study the compression performance of deuterium-tritium (DT)-fi...
متن کاملPSFC/JA-09-03 Diagnosing fuel ρR and ρR asymmetries in cryogenic DT implosions using charged-particle spectrometry at OMEGA
Determining fuel areal density (ρR) in moderate-ρR (100-200 mg/cm 2) cryogenic DT implosions is challenging as it requires new spectrometry techniques and analysis methods to be developed. In this paper, we describe a new method for analyzing the spectrum of knock-on deuterons (KO-D), elastically scattered by primary DT neutrons, from which a fuel ρR can be inferred for values up to ~200 mg/cm ...

The compact Wedge Range Filter (WRF) proton spectrometer was developed for OMEGA and transferred to the National Ignition Facility (NIF) as a National Ignition Campaign diagnostic. The WRF measures the spectrum of protons from D-(3)He reactions in tuning-campaign implosions containing D and (3)He gas; in this work we report on the first proton spectroscopy measurement on the NIF using WRFs. The...
