Computing Correlation between Piecewise-Linear Functions

چکیده
We study the problem of computing correlation between two piecewise-linear bivariate functions defined over a common domain, where the surfaces they define in 3D—polyhedral terrains—can be transformed vertically by a linear transformation of the third coordinate (scaling and translation). We present a randomized algorithm that minimizes the maximum vertical distance between the graphs of the two functions, over all linear transformations of one of the terrains, in O(n polylog n) expected time, where n is the total number of vertices in the graphs of the two functions. We also present approximation algorithms for minimizing the mean distance between the graphs of univariate and bivariate functions. For univariate functions we present a (1 + ε)-approximation algorithm that runs in O(n(1 + log(1/ε))) expected time, for any fixed ε > 0. The (1 + ε)-approximation algorithm for bivariate functions runs in O(n/ε) time, for any fixed ε > 0, provided the two functions are defined over the same triangulation of their domain.

متن کاملIdealized Piecewise Linear Branch Prediction
Traditional branch predictors exploit correlations between pattern history and branch outcome to predict branches, but there is a stronger and more natural correlation between path history and branch outcome. I exploit this correlation with piecewise linear branch prediction, an idealized branch predictor that develops a set of linear functions, one for each program path to the branch to be pre...

Fuzzy Hermite interpolation of 5th degree generalizes Lagrange interpolation by fitting a polynomial to a function f that not only interpolates f at each knot but also interpolates two number of consecutive Generalized Hukuhara derivatives of f at each knot. The provided solution for the 5th degree fuzzy Hermite interpolation problem in this paper is based on cardinal basis functions linear com...
متن کاملCharacterization of Stabilizing Switching Sequences in Switched Linear Systems Using Piecewise Linear Lyapunov Functions
In this paper, the stability of switched linear systems is investigated using piecewise linear Lyapunov functions. Given a switched linear system, we present a systematic methodology for computing switching laws that guarantee stability based on the matrices of the system. We assume that each individual subsystem is stable and admits a piecewise linear Lyapunov function. Based on these Lyapunov...
متن کاملOn Computing the Convex Hull of (Piecewise) Spherical Objects
We utilize support functions to transform the problem of constructing the convex hull of a finite set of spherical objects into the problem of computing the upper envelope of piecewise linear functions. This approach is particularly suited if the objects are (possibly intersecting) circular arcs in the plane or spheres in three-space.
