Planetary dynamics in stellar clusters

چکیده
We investigate how the formation and evolution of extrasolar planetary systems can be affected by stellar encounters that occur in the crowded conditions of a stellar cluster. Using plausible estimates of cluster evolution, we show how planet formation may be supressed in globular clusters while planets wider than > ∼ 0.1 au that do form in such environments can be ejected from their stellar system. Less crowded systems such as open clusters have a much reduced effect on any planetary system. Planet formation is unaffected in open clusters and only the wider planetary systems will be disrupted during the cluster’s lifetime. The potential for free-floating planets in these environments is also discussed.

Stars are generally formed in clusters. Prior to the the dispersal of small clusters, which occurs on the time scale of 10 8 yr, dynamical interaction between young stars may also affect the stability and dynamical evolution of their companion planetary systems. Through a series of numerical simulations, we show that distant stellar encounters generally do not strongly modify the compact and ne...

At least 10-15% of nearby sun-like stars have known Jupiter-mass planets. In contrast, very few planets are found in mature open and globular clusters such as the Hyades and 47 Tuc. We explore here the possibility that this dichotomy is due to the post-formation disruption of planetary systems associated with the stellar encounters in long-lived clusters. One supporting piece of evidence for th...

The modern study of the dynamics of stellar systems requires the use of high-performance computers. Indeed, an accurate modelization of the structure and evolution of self-gravitating systems like planetary systems, open clusters, globular clusters and galaxies imply the evaluation of body-body interaction over the whole size of the structure, a task that is computationally very expensive, in p...
