Visually Controlled Locomotion: 40 years Later
نویسنده
چکیده
Gibson's article, "Visually Controlled Locomotion and Visual Orientation in Animals" (1958/this issue), is the leading statement of a nonrepresentational, information-based approach to visual control. The core ideas he introduced 40 years ago resurface, explicitly or implicitly, in much contemporary work on perception and action in humans, insects, robots, and autonomous agents. The purpose of this special issue is to assess the continuing pertinence of these insights and illustrate current directions in research on visually controlled locomotion. In this article, I locate the 1958 article in the context of Gibson's emerging theory of perception, contrast information-based control with standard model-based and cybernetic control architectures, evaluate the current status of Gibson's visual control formulae, and situate visual control within an informational-dynamical approach to agent--environment systems.

Toward an Ecological Field Theory of Perceptual Control of Locomotion
The field concept was introduced into physics in the 19th century. Soon afterward, some Gestaltists tried to use this approach to characterize the internal global brain process. Conversely, another Gestaltist, Lewin (1938), tried to develop a field description of the physical and social environment in which the brain field was immersed. Later, J. J. Gibson (Gibson & Crooks, 1938/1982) attempted...
متن کاملUnconstrained Walking Plane to Virtual Environment for Spatial Learning by Visually Impaired
Treadmill-style locomotion interfaces for locomotion in virtual environment typically have two problems that impact their usability: bulky or complex drive mechanism and stability problem. The bulky or complex drive mechanism requirement restricts the practical use of this locomotion interface and stability problem results in the induction of fear psychosis to the user. This paper describes a n...
متن کاملDevelopment and segmentation of visually controlled movement by selective exposure during rearing.
Three experiments are reported which clarify the role of movement-produced changes in visual stimulation for the acquisition of visually controlled behaviors. The first study shows that exposure during passive transport, which provides an asystematic relation between self-produced movements and visual stimulation, delays the acquisition of visual-motor coordination when a kitten is subsequently...
متن کاملAssociation of Gait Characteristics and Depression in Patients with Parkinson's Disease Assessed in Goal-Directed Locomotion Task
Introduction. In the genesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical phenomenology the exact nature of the association between bradykinesia and affective variables is unclear. In the present study, we analyzed the gait characteristics and level of depression in PD and healthy volunteers. Methods. Patients with PD (n = 48) and healthy controls (n = 52) were recruited for the present study. Walking ...
