Received: 14-01-10 Accepted: 10-08-10 Abstract Ileocolonoscopy plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) This article reviews the utility of ileocolonoscopy in the diagnosis of the ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease (CD). It emphasizes recommendations for monitoring cancer and the use of the most recent techniques to increase detection of dysplasia. It discusses the latest diagnostic techniques such as colonoscopy with narrow band imaging (NBI), the role of colonoscopy in management of IBD complications, and the current role of endoscopic capsules and balloon assisted enteroscopy in patients with Crohn’s disease.
