چکیده

In this paper, we present an analytical model to study the soft handoff coverage by evaluating the new call blocking and the handoff call dropping probabilities in a cellular CDMA system. By assuming that the new call generation rate per unit area is uniformly distributed over the service area, enlarging the soft handoff region may increase both the blocking and the dropping probabilities. On the contrary, although shrinking the soft handoff region can reduce the two probabilities, an adverse effect may occur when the new call generation rate per unit area is largely increased. Finally, by fixing the maximum number of mobile calls per cell to a constant, we found out that a slight increase in the soft handoff region may greatly reduce the blocking and the dropping probabilities as well.

Effect of Soft and Softer Handoffs on CDMA System Capacity

The effect of soft and softer handoffs on codedivision multiple-access (CDMA) system capacity is evaluated for unsectorized and sectorized hexagonal cells according to an average bit energy-to-interference power spectral density, which corresponds to a bit-error rate (BER) of 10 3. The effect of imperfect sectorization on sectorization efficiency is also considered. On the reverse link, there i...

Characterization of Soft Handoff in CDMA Systems

Many analytical approaches have been proposed for handoff analysis based on hard handoff in mobile communication systems. In code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems with soft handoff, mobile stations (MS’s) within a soft-handoff region (SR) use multiple radio channels and receive their signals from multiple base stations (BS’s) simultaneously. Therefore, SR’s should be considered for hando...

On the Influences of Enlarging or Shrinking the Soft Handoff Coverage for a Cellular CDMA System

This paper is concerned with the influences of enlarging or shrinking the soft handoff coverage on the new-call blocking and the handoff-call dropping probabilities in a cellular CDMA system. In the proposed analytic model, we assume a cell is in hexagonal shape with two parameters, a and b, representing the soft handoff region between the outer and the inner cell. In the traffic model, we assu...

H Soft Handoffs in CDMA Mobile Systems

nent of mobile cellular communication systems. Mobility causes dynamic variations in link quality and interference levels in cellular systems, sometimes requiring that a particular user change its serving base station. This change is known as a handoff. In first-generation cellular systems like the Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) [1, 2], handoffs were relatively simple. Second-generation ce...
