The Nylon Scintillator Containment Vessels for the Borexino Solar Neutrino Experiment
نویسندگان
چکیده
Borexino is a solar neutrino experiment designed to observe the 0.86MeV Be neutrinos emitted in the pp cycle of the sun. Neutrinos will be detected by their elastic scattering on electrons in 100 tons of liquid scintillator. The neutrino event rate in the scintillator is expected to be low (∼0.35 events per day per ton), and the signals will be at energies below 1.5MeV, where background from natural radioactivity is prominent. Scintillation light produced by the recoil electrons is observed by an array of 2240 photomultiplier tubes. Because of the intrinsic radioactive contaminants in these PMTs, the liquid scintillator is shielded from them by a thick barrier of buffer fluid. A spherical vessel made of thin nylon film contains the scintillator, separating it from the surrounding buffer. The buffer region itself is divided into two concentric shells by a second nylon vessel in order to prevent inward diffusion of radon atoms. The radioactive background requirements for Borexino are challenging to meet, especially for the scintillator and these nylon vessels. Besides meeting requirements for low radioactivity, the nylon vessels must also satisfy requirements for mechanical, optical, and chemical properties. The present paper describes the research and development, construction, and installation of the nylon vessels for the Borexino experiment.

Low background techniques for the Borexino nylon vessels
Borexino is an organic liquid scintillator underground detector for low energy solar neutrinos. The experiment has to satisfy extremely stringent low background requirements. The thin nylon spherical scintillator containment vessel has to meet cleanliness and low radioactivity levels second only, within the detector, to the scintillator itself. Overall, the background from the vessel in the fid...
متن کاملBorexino: a Real Time Liquid Scintillator Detector for Low Energy Solar Neutrino Study
Borexino is a large unsegmented calorimeter featuring 300 tons of liquid scintillator, contained in a 8.5 meter nylon vessel, viewed by 2200 PMTs. The main goal of Borexino is the study, in real time, of low energy solar neutrinos, and in particular, the monoenergetic neutrinos coming from Be, which is one of the missing links on the solar neutrino problem. The achievement of high radiopurity l...
متن کامل226Ra, 210Pb, 210Bi and 210Po deposition and removal from surfaces and liquids
Deposition of 226Ra from water on nylon was investigated. Measurements performed for different pH and different radium concentrations in the water gave similar absolute activities deposited on the foil surface. Obtained results were used to estimate the amount of 226Ra plated-out on the nylon scintillator vessel in the solar neutrino experiment BOREXINO during filling of the detector. Another p...
متن کاملHow to observe B solar neutrinos in liquid scintillator detectors
We show that liquid organic scintillator detectors (e. g., KamLAND and Borexino) can measure the 8B solar neutrino flux by means of the νe charged current interaction with the 13C nuclei naturally contained in the scintillators. The neutrino events can be identified by exploiting the time and space coincidence with the subsequent decay of the produced 13N nuclei. We perform a detailed analysis ...
متن کاملResults from the Borexino Experiment
Borexino is a low threshold liquid-scintillator detector for solar neutrinos located in the LNGS underground laboratory, Italy. Because of the ultra-high radio purity it is the first experiment able to do a real-time analysis of the low energetic solar neutrinos. A detection of the solar Be neutrinos with a rate of 49 ± 7 counts/day/100tons can be reported (192 days of live time measurement). B...
