A psychologically-based model of voter turnout

چکیده
We analyze a psychologically-based model of voter turnout. Potential voters experience regret if they fail to vote, which is the motivation for participation in voting. Regret from abstention is inversely related to the margin of victory. Voters on the winner’s side experience less regret than those on the loser’s side. We show that the unique equilibrium involves positive voter turnout. We show that the losing side has higher turnout. In addition, voter turnout is positively related to importance of the election and the competitiveness of the election. We also consider scenarios in which voters are uncertain ∗We thank audiences at Duke University, University of British Columbia, University of Wisonsin–Madison, Midwest Economic Theory Meeting–East Lansing, Far Eastern Meeting of the Econometric Society–Beijing, Third Asian General Equilibrium Workshop–Taipei for helpful comments. The Dynamics of Voter Turnout and Party Choice
A considerable body of research focuses on why voter turnout changed — specifically, why it declined — in the 1960s and 1970s. Most models of the change focus on factors such as a decline in civic involvement or a shift in the age distribution toward younger citizens who vote less frequently. While these approaches have taught us much about voter turnout, they are puzzling in that none actually...
متن کاملExplaining voter turnout patterns: An information theory
Voting research is rich in empirical regularities yet a parsimonious theory of voter turnout that can match the facts has proven to be elusive. This paper argues that voter turnout patterns can be explained by extending the traditional rational voter model to include limited information. A model is presented in which utility-ma~ximizing consumers receive higher payoffs from voting the more conf...
متن کاملWhy Does Sweden Have Higher Levels of Voter Turnout Than Finland?
Voter turnout is considered the “canary in the coal mine” when it comes to assessing the health of civic participation in a democracy; low turnout in particular is indicative of broader problems. Although voter turnout is quite high in both Sweden and Finland, turnout is notably higher in Sweden despite a long list of similarities between the two countries. Why is there this puzzling discrepanc...
متن کاملThe Effects of Photographic Indentification on Voter Turnout in Indiana: A County-Level Analysis
I examine the change in voter turnout across Indiana counties before and after the implementation of photo ID requirements. Overall, statewide turnout increased by about two percentage points after photo ID; further, there is no consistent evidence that counties that have higher percentages of minority, poor, elderly or less-educated population suffer any reduction in voter turnout relative to ...
متن کاملPART TWO 4 Extending King’s Ecological Inference Model to Multiple Elections Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo
King’s EI estimator has become a widely used procedure for tackling so-called ecological inference problems. The canonical ecological inference problem involves inferring the rate of voter turnout among two racial groups in a set of electoral precincts from observations on the racial composition and total voter turnout in each precinct. As a Bayesian hierarchical model, EI links information abo...
