چکیده

A method of mapping sets of uninterpreted record or relation schemes into entity-relationship diagrams is described and then applied to two conceptual design problems. First, the method is applied to the design of relational databases. It is shown that the method can be interpreted as a normalization procedure that maps a given relational schema into a new schema that represents an entity-relationship diagram. That is, the original schema has an interpretation in terms of higher-order concepts, which helps in understanding the semantics of the database it describes. The second design problem is related to the conversion of conventionaljile systems to the database approach. The method is used in this context to obtain a database conceptual schema from the description of the conventional system, which is one of the fundamental steps of the conversion process.

Logical Database Design: from Conceptual to Logical Schema

Definition Logical database design is the process of transforming (or mapping) a conceptual schema of the application domain into a schema for the data model underlying a particular DBMS, such as the relational or objectoriented data model. This mapping can be understood as the result of trying to achieve two distinct sets of goals: (i) representation goal: preserving the ability to capture and...

Multi-Valued Relationship Attributes in Extended Entity Relationship Model and Their Mapping to Relational Schema

Conceptual modeling is one of the most important phases in designing database applications. The success of this design relies heavily on how clearly the real world requirements are represented in the conceptual model. To date, the Extended Entity Relationship (EER) model extended from the traditional Entity Relationship (ER) model is a widely used modeling technique during the phase of conceptu...

ERM-Tutor an ER-to-Relational Mapping Tutor

Relational Databases are extremely commonplace in today’s society. Because of this the skill of designing such databases is often taught in university courses, where part of this skill involves being able to map from a conceptual schema to relational database tables. This is a mapping algorithm that maps from the Entity Relationship conceptual schema to relational database tables, and applying ...

From Entity Relationship to XML Schema: A Graph-Theoretic Approach

We propose a mapping from the Enhanced Entity Relationship conceptual model to the W3C XML Schema Language with the following properties: information and integrity constraints are preserved, no redundance is introduced, different hierarchical views of the conceptual information are available, the resulting XML structure is highly connected, and the design is reversible. We investigate two diffe...
