چکیده

Malathion resistance developed in a Drosophila melanogaster population that has been exposed to malathion for almost 20 years. Genetic analyses showed that malathion resistance in this population is under control of several genes that are located on the first, second and third chromosome. The second chromosome contributes the most to resistance; the factor(s) involved may be (partly) dominant or additive and additional recessive genes may also be present on this chromosome. Although to a lesser extent, the third chromosome also contributes to resistance, the factors being mostly recessive or only expressed in interaction with the second chromosome. On the Xchromosome, a factor with a very small effect on resistance was observed.

Toxicological Evaluation of a New Lepidopteran Insecticide, Flubendiamide, in Non-Target Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Background: Flubendiamide, comparatively a new pesticide designed to eradicate lepidopteran insect pests is known to have low risk to birds, mammals, fish, algae, honey bees, non-target arthropods, earthworms, soil macro- and micro-organisms, non-target plants as well as sewage treatment organisms; however, the risk assessment for aquatic invertebrates from metabolite could not be finalized wit...

Transposable Element ‘roo’ Attaches to Nuclear Matrix of the Drosophila melanogaster

The genome of eukaryotes is organized into structural units of chromatin loops. This higher order organization is supported by a nuclear skeleton called the nuclear matrix. The genomic DNA associated with the nuclear matrix is called the matrix associated region (MAR). Only a few genome-wide screens have been attempted, although many studies have characterized locusspecific MAR DNA sequences. I...

Positive correlation between malathion resistance and fecundity within natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster

The correlation between malathion resistance and fecundity was investigated in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Previous studies have shown that insecticide resistance is negatively correlated with reproductive components in insects. To investigate this relationship, the fecundity (egg production) was determined in 2 natural and 2 esterase 6 (Est-6) marker populations (4016 and 4211) and...

Growth and molting disruption effects of azadirachtin against Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Azadirachtin, a biorational insecticide, known to be an antagonist of the juvenile hormone and 20 hydroxyecdysone (20E), has been used successfully against insect pests; however, its effects on nontarget organisms remain contradictory. The current study examined the lethal and sublethal effects of azadirachtin on Drosophila melanogaster Meigen, 1830 (Diptera: Drosophilidae) as biological model....

The Combined Effect of Methyl- and Ethyl-Paraben on Lifespan and Preadult Development Period of Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

Parabens are widely used as preservative substances in foods, pharmaceuticals, industrial products, and cosmetics. But several studies have cautioned that parabens have estrogenic or endocrine-disrupting properties. Drosophila melanogaster is an ideal model in vivo to detect the toxic effects of chemistry. The study was designed to assess the potential additive toxic effects of methylparaben (M...
