Linear response of galactic halos to adiabatic gravitational perturbations

چکیده
We determine the response of a self-similar isothermal stellar system to small adiabatic gravitational perturbations. For odd spherical harmonics, the response is identical to the response of the analogous isothermal fluid system. For even spherical harmonics, the response can be regarded as an infinite series of wavetrains in log r, implying alternating compression and rarefaction in equal logarithmic radius intervals. Partly because of the oscillatory nature of the solutions, tidal fields from external sources are not strongly amplified by an intervening isothermal stellar system, except at radii ∼< 10 times the satellite radius; at some radii the stellar system can even screen the external tidal field in a manner analogous to Debye screening. As Weinberg has pointed out, individual resonances in a stellar system can strongly amplify external tidal fields over a limited radial range, but we cannot address this possibility because we examine only adiabatic perturbations. We also discuss the application of our method to the halo response caused by the slow growth of an embedded thin disk. The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملThe Evolution of X–ray Clusters and the Entropy of the Intra Cluster Medium
The thermodynamics of the diffuse, X-ray emitting gas in clusters of galaxies is determined by gravitational processes associated with shock heating, adiabatic compression, and non–gravitational processes such as heating by SNe, stellar winds, activity in the central galactic nucleus, and radiative cooling. The effect of gravitational processes on the thermodynamics of the Intra Cluster Medium ...

We explore the relationship between the mass function of CDM halos and dynamical probes of the mass function such as the distribution of gravitational lens separations and the local velocity function. The compression of galactic halos by the cooling baryons, a standard component of modern models, leads to a feature in the distribution of lens separations near ∆θ = 3. ′′ 0 or in the velocity fun...
متن کاملStochastic gravitational wave background from cold dark matter halos
The current knowledge of cosmological structure formation suggests that Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halos possess a non-spherical density profile, implying that cosmic structures can be potential sources of gravitational waves via power transfer from scalar perturbations to tensor metric modes in the non-linear regime. By means of a previously developed mathematical formalism and a triaxial collapse...
متن کاملEntropy amplification from energy feedback in simulated galaxy groups and clusters
We use hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters and groups to study the effect of pre–heating on the entropy structure of the intra–cluster medium (ICM). Our simulations account for non–gravitational heating of the gas either by imposing a minimum entropy floor at redshift zh = 3 in adiabatic simulations, or by considering feedback by galactic winds powered by supernova (SN) energy in runs...
