Vertical equilibrium of molecular gas in galaxies

چکیده

Wepresent CO(1-0) andCO(2-1) observations of the two nearly face-on galaxies NGC628 and NGC3938, in particular cuts along the major and minor axis. The contribution of the beam-smeared in-plane velocity gradients to the observed velocity width is quite small in the outer parts of the galaxies. This allows us to derive the velocity dispersion of the molecular gas perpendicular to the plane. We find that this dispersion is remarkably constant with radius, 6 km s−1for NGC628 and 8.5 km s−1for NGC3938, and of the same order as the H i dispersion. The constancy of the value is interpreted in terms of a feedback mechanism involving gravitational instabilities and gas dissipation. The similarity of the CO and H i dispersions suggests that the two components are well mixed, and are only two different phases of the same kinematical gas component. The gas can be transformed from the atomic phase to the molecular phase and vice-versa several times during a z-oscillation.

Pressure Relations and Vertical Equilibrium in the Turbulent, Multiphase ISM

We use numerical simulations of turbulent, multiphase, self-gravitating gas orbiting in the disks of model galaxies to study the relationships among pressure, the vertical distribution of gas, and the relative proportions of dense and diffuse gas. A common assumption is that the interstellar medium (ISM) is in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium. We show that the disk height and mean midplane pres...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

The Role of Molecular Gas in Obscuring Seyfert Active Galactic Nuclei

In a sample of local active galactic nuclei (AGNs) studied at a spatial resolution on the order of 10 pc, we show that the interstellar medium traced by the molecular hydrogen ν=1-0 S(1) line at 2.1 μm forms a geometrically thick, clumpy disk. The kinematics of the molecular gas reveals general rotation, although an additional significant component of random bulk motion is required by the high ...

Formation of Mini-galaxies in Defunct Cosmological H Ii Regions

Using a large set of high resolution numerical simulations incorporating non-equilibrium molecular hydrogen chemistry and a constant source of external radiation, we study gas collapse in previously photo-ionized mini-galaxies with virial temperatures less than 104 K in the early universe (redshifts z = 10 − 20). We confirm that the mechanism of positive feedback of ionizing radiation on star f...
