Disaggregation in the Cloud with μInstances and Cirrus
نویسنده
چکیده
Resource disaggregation can provide significant improvements in the utilization of resources in the datacenter. A Google cluster trace analysis confirms that up to 70% of memory may be recovered with resource disaggregation. However, resource disaggregation in the cloud is currently unfeasible due to the hardware and network changes required by previously proposed designs. We make the observation that existing cloud offers already provide logical heterogeneity which can be leveraged to match closely the resources demanded by applications. Deploying a system across a heterogeneous set of VMs can lead to higher performance per dollar. To provide support for deploying systems in logically disaggregated clusters we propose a framework called Cirrus. Cirrus composes small compute-intensive tasks (μTasks) with large memory instances to provide the resources required by applications. Cirrus also provides an efficient interface for communication between tasks through distributed memory.

Cirrus Cloud Properties from a Cloud-Resolving Model Simulation Compared to Cloud Radar Observations
Cloud radar data collected at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program’s Southern Great Plains site were used to evaluate the properties of cirrus clouds that occurred in a cloud-resolving model (CRM) simulation of the 29-day summer 1997 intensive observation period (IOP). The simulation was ‘‘forced’’ by the large-scale advective temperature and water vapor tendencies, horizontal wi...

Cirrus cloud detection accuracy of GOSAT/CAI and Landsat-8 is evaluated with a ground based Laser Radar: Lidar data and sky view camera data. Also, the evaluation results are confirmed with Calipso data together with a topographic representation of vertical profile of cloud structure. Furthermore, origin of cirrus clouds is estimated with forward trajectory analysis. The results show that GOSAT...
متن کاملCirrus Cloud Properties and the Large-Scale Meteorological Environment: Relationships Derived from A-Train and NCEP–NCAR Reanalysis Data
Empirical knowledge of how cirrus cloud properties are coupled with the large-scale meteorological environment is a prerequisite for understanding the role of microphysical processes in the life cycle of cirrus cloud systems. Using active and passive remote sensing data from the A-Train, relationships between cirrus cloud properties and the large-scale dynamics are examined. Mesoscale cirrus ev...
متن کاملCirrus Detrainment-Temperature Feedback
In considering the role of cirriform clouds in climate change, it is important to distinguish among the relationships of different high cloud types to large-scale atmospheric dynamics. While cirrostratus and cirrocumulus (CsCc) have a clear relation to deep convective sources, the ensemble behavior of cirrus is more subtle. An empirical relation is found between cirrus fraction and deep cloud t...
