چکیده

We develop two new designs of unitary differential space-time modulation (DSTM) with low decoding complexity. Their decoder can be separated into a few parallel decoders, each of which has a decoding search space of less than N if the DSTM codebook contains N codewords. Both designs are based on the concept of joint modulation, which means that several information symbols are jointly modulated, unlike the conventional symbol-by-symbol modulation. The first design is based on Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (O-STBC) with joint constellation constructed from spherical codes. The second design is based on Quasi-Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (QO-STBC) with specially designed pair-wise constellation sets. Both the proposed unitary DSTM schemes have considerably lower decoding complexity than many prior DSTM schemes, including those based on Group Codes and Sp(2) which generally have a decoding search space of N for a codebook size of N codewords, and much better decoding performance than the existing O-STBC DSTM scheme. Between two designs, the proposed DSTM based on O-STBC generally has better decoding performance, while the proposed DSTM based on QO-STBC has lower decoding complexity when 8 transmit antennas.

Multiple trellis coded differential unitary space-time modulation in Rayleigh flat fading

In this paper, differential unitary space-time modulation (DUSTM) is combined with multiple t re l l i s codes. The set partitioning of a unitary space-time constellation for multiple t re l l i s code is described, and several code constructed are provided. The computational complexity o f multiple trel l is coded DUSTM is considered. Numerical results are given.

Fast Multiple–Symbol Differential Detection for Unitary Space–Time Modulation

Unitary differential space–time modulation (UDSTM) where unitary matrix symbols are differentially encoded prior to transmission is an attractive solution for transmission over multiple–input multiple–output (MIMO) fading channels without requiring channel state information (CSI). In this work we investigate and optimize the application of tree–search algorithms to maximum–likelihood multiple–s...

Performance of unitary space-time modulation in a continuously changing channel

The fading channel is a significant problem in many communications environments. In this paper, we examine the performance of unitary space-time modulation in a time-varying channel. We use a Gauss-Markov model of the continuously varying channel to characterize performance of differential and trained modulation. We find a performance ceiling at high SNR where the effect of the changing channel...

Space-Time Differentially Coded Orthogonal Matrix Modulation using QAM

This work addresses digital communication in a wireless system with multiple antennas at transmitter and/or receiver when the channel state information is unknown at the transmitter as well as at the receiver. We propose a generalized bandwidth-efficient space-time differentially coded orthogonal non-unitary matrix modulation scheme with non-coherent soft-output detector. Most proposals which a...

QPSK differential space time coding on different unitary matrices sets and initializations

This letter investigates a distinct set of complex unitary matrices for differential space time coding by using QPSK modulation. The numerical results show that the properly selection of the initial transmission matrix and the set of unitary matrices can efficiently improve the bit error rate (BER) performance, especially for the antennas correlated fading channel. The computer simulations are ...
