چکیده

Apart from eventration very little has been written about paralysis of the hemidiaphragm occurring without obvious cause. It is mentioned by Perry (1952), and Couch in 1953 reported 11 cases of paralysis of undetermined cause. The purpose of this paper is to report 10 cases of paralysis of the hemidiaphragm and five cases of partial paralysis (paresis) for which no cause was found during the period of observation. All were associated with a small or moderate rise in the level of the affected dome. Three cases of eventration of the diaphragm and one of dissociated paresis due to prophylactic inoculation are also reported briefly to provide added material for discussing the relationship between the type of paralysis described here and eventration as well as its aetiology.

Bilateral Facial Paralysis and Otitis Media as the First Presentations of Wegener’s Granulomatosis: A Case Report

Introduction: Cranial nerve palsy in Wegener’s granulomatosis is a curious incident, particularly if it occurs without kidney or lung involvement. In a review of medical articles, only 1 case of Wegener’s granulomatosis with bilateral facial nerve palsy was found. Case Presentation: The patient was a 16-year-old female who presented with pain and hearing ...

Abdominal wall movement in normals and patients with hemidiaphragmatic and bilateral diaphragmatic palsy.

Abdominal wall movement in normals and patients with hemidiaphragmatic and bilateral diaphragmatic palsy. The abdomen and ribcage volume contribution to the tidal volume have been determined using magnetometers in three groups of subjects-normal males, patients with hemidiaphragmatic palsy, and patients with bilateral diaphragmatic palsy. In all three groups the main moving parts appear to be t...

Decreasing the local anesthetic volume from 20 to 10 mL for ultrasound-guided interscalene block at the cricoid level does not reduce the incidence of hemidiaphragmatic paresis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES This prospective, randomized, double blind study was designed to determine whether reduction in volume from 20 to 10 mL of ropivacaine 0.5% for ultrasound-guided interscalene block might decrease the incidence of diaphragmatic paresis and preserve pulmonary function. METHOD Thirty patients scheduled for arthroscopic shoulder surgery were randomized to receive either ...

Ultrasonic evaluation of movement of the diaphragm after acute cerebral infarction.

Respiratory dysfunction is an important complication of acute stroke but its mechanisms are poorly understood. Previous indirect assessments suggest that paralysis of the diaphragm occurs contralateral to the cerebral lesion. Diaphragmatic excursion was studied with real time ultrasound during quiet and deep breathing in 50 patients within 72 hours of acute stroke and 40 controls. During quiet ...

Prolonged hemidiaphragmatic paresis following continuous interscalene brachial plexus block

Interscalene brachial plexus block provides effective anesthesia and analgesia for shoulder surgery. One of the disadvantages of this technique is the risk of hemidiaphragmatic paresis, which can occur as a result of phrenic nerve block and can cause a decrease in the pulmonary function, limiting the use of the block in patients with reduced functional residual capacity or a preexisting pulmona...
