Bacopa monniera augments endogenous antioxidants and attenuates myocardial injury

چکیده
Bacopa monniera (Bm), commonly known as brahmi, is widely used in the Indian System of Medicine as a notropic agent. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of oral administration of Bm (25, 75 and 150 mg/kg) for 21 days on: (i) myocardial antioxidant system and (ii) oxidative stress induced by isoproterenol (ISP) in the rat heart. Oral administration of Bm (75 and 150 mg/kg) per se to healthy experimental rats for 21 days significantly augmented endogenous antioxidants and reduced basal lipid peroxidation (p<0.05). Hearts were also subjected to ISP (85 mg/kg), subcutaneously on 20 and 21 day. Significant myocyte injury, decline in antioxidant status and elevation in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels was observed in this group. Interestingly, ISP induced biochemical and histopathological perturbations were significantly prevented by Bm (75 mg/kg) pre-treatment. The results indicate that Bm (75 mg) administration causes myocardial adaptation and protects rat hearts from oxidative stress associated with ISP.

Bacopa monniera selectively attenuates suppressed Superoxide dismutase activity in Diazepam induced amnesic mice
BACKGROUND Amnesia is characterized by loss of memory that could result from abnormal neuro-chemical homeostasis, genetic predisposition or drug abuse. We earlier reported that B. monniera attenuates diazepam, scopolamine and L-NNA induced amnesia and wanted to test if SOD levels were affected by its administration. PURPOSE B. monniera is earlier reported to augment the defense system for oxi...

Reactive oxygen species [ROS] cause oxidative damage to the tissues and protection from such damages are provided by endogenous and exogenous antioxidants. Plant based antioxidants are preferred due to the multiple mechanisms of actions and of the phytochemicals present in them. 80% alcoholic extract of leaves of Aloe vera, Bacopa monniera, Moringa oleifera and rhizome of Zingiber officinale wa...

Introduction Bacopa monniera, also referred to as Bacopa monnieri, Herpestis monniera, water hyssop, and “Brahmi,” has been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for centuries. Traditionally, it was used as a brain tonic to enhance memory development, learning, and concentration, and to provide relief to patients with anxiety or epileptic disorders. The plant has also been used in India and ...
متن کاملEffect of chlorophyll and aqueous extracts of Bacopa monniera and Valeriana wallichii on ischaemia and reperfusion-induced cerebral injury in mice.
Bilateral carotid artery occlusion followed by reperfusion produced significant cerebral infarction and impaired short-term memory, motor co-ordination and lateral push response. Individual pretreatments with chlorophyll and aqueous extracts of B. monniera and V. wallichii markedly attenuated ischaemia-reperfusion induced cerebral injury in terms of decreased infarct size, increase in short-ter...
متن کاملBacopa monniera Treatment Reverses Chronic Unpredictable Stress Induced Depressive like Behavior by Increasing Expression of Neurotrophins in Rat Brain
Role of Bacopa monniera in retaining memory & learning is well known. Some recent observations have also indicated its possible role as antidepressant. However, conclusive evidences are still lacking. Therefore, in the present investigation we aim to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of Bacopa monniera in alleviating the symptoms of stress related disorders in rats exposed to chronic unpredi...
