چکیده

The empirical analysis in this paper adopts logit models to study the hazard rate of ceasing from work by the next year for Italian older employees. The speci…cations are estimated resorting to the framework proposed by Güell and Hu (2006), which extracts information from repeated independent cross-sections to recover the hazard rate of interest at the individual level. The sample is drawn from the ISTAT survey Aspects of Everyday Life and includes employees aged 5065 in 1993-2002. Our results show that, even conditioning on a wide set of socioeconomic factors, the age pro…le of the hazard rate is increasing and con…rms the low labor market attachment of older workers. Further, the time evolution of the risk of becoming not employed appears to be hump-shaped and achieves its maximum for the cohorts of employees at work in the period 1996-1998, which is characterized by the introduction of important changes in the Social Security system aimed at extending the working life of the elderly. JEL Codes: C41, J26.

Estimating Intensive and Extensive Tax Responsiveness: Do Older Workers Respond to Income Taxes?

This paper studies the impact of income taxes on intensive and extensive labor supply decisions for older workers. The literature provides little evidence about the responsiveness of the older population to tax incentives, though the tax code is a potentially important mechanism for affecting retirement behavior. We estimate the intensive and extensive margins jointly with a new approach accoun...

Estimating labour supply elasticities based on cross-country micro data: A bridge between micro and macro estimates?

We utilise repeated cross sections of micro data from several countries, available from the Luxembourg Income Study, LIS, to estimate labour supply elasticities, both at the intensive and extensive margin. The benefit of the data is that it spans over four decades and includes a large number of tax reform episodes, with tax rate variation arising both from cross-sectional and country-level diff...

C Taxes , Wages , and the Labor Supply of Older Americans

The aging of the U.S. population, combined with an increasing probability that any given older individual will work, means that the importance of older workers to the labor force is rising. One possible solution to the solvency problems facing the Social Security System is increasing the labor supply of older workers. Understanding how policy levers can affect the labor supply of the elderly th...

Estimating the social return to higher education: evidence from longitudinal and repeated cross-sectional data

Economists have speculated for at least a century that the social return to education may exceed the private return. In this paper, I estimate spillovers from college education by comparing wages for otherwise similar individuals who work in cities with di*erent shares of college graduates in the labor force. A key issue in this comparison is the presence of unobservable characteristics of indi...

Does Labor Legislation Benefit Workers? We examine changes in life satisfaction of Japanese and Koreans over a period when hours of work were cut exogenously because employers suddenly faced an overtime penalty that had become e...
