Numerical simulation for a droplet fission process of electrowetting on dielectric device

چکیده
Electrowetting has been proposed as a technique for manipulating droplets surrounded by air or oil. In this paper, we discuss the modeling and simulation of the droplet fission process between two parallel plates inside an electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) device. Since the gap between the plates is small, we use the two-phase Hele-Shaw flow as a model. An immersed boundary (IB) method is employed to solve the governing equations and a local level set method is used to track the drop interface. For comparison purposes, the same set of two-phase HeleShaw equations are also solved directly using the ghost-fluid (GF) method. Numerical results are consistent with experimental observations reported in the literature, provided that care is taken to treat the contact angle.

A genetic algorithm-based approach for numerical solution of droplet status after Coulomb fission using the energy
As a droplet moves, due to evaporation at the surface, the droplet size is gradually reduced. Due to decreasing the size of the droplets moving in the spray core, the surface charges become closer and the repulsive force between the charges increases. When the Coulombic force overcomes the surface tension force (Rayleigh instability) the droplet breaks into smaller droplets (Coulomb fission). T...

متن کاملA scaling model for electrowetting-on-dielectric microfluidic actuators
A hydrodynamic scaling model of droplet actuation in an electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWD) actuator is presented that takes into account the effects of contact angle hysteresis, drag from the filler fluid, drag from the solid walls, and change in the actuation force while a droplet traverses a neighboring electrode. Based on this model, the threshold voltage, VT, for droplet actuation is estima...
