Dynamic Collimation for Linear Colliders

چکیده

Experience with the SLC has indicated that backgrounds caused by the tails of the transverse beam distribution will be a serious problem for a next generation linear collider. Mechanical scrapers may not provide the best solution, because they may be damaged by the tiny, intense beams, and dso because they may induce wakeiIeld kicks large enough to cause emittance dilution. In this paper, we present a possible solution, which uses several n&linear lenees to drive the tails of the beam to large amplitudes where they can be more easily scraped mechanically. Simulations of several different schemes are presented and evaluated with respect to effectiveness, tolerances and wake&Id effects.

Further Developments in Dynamic Focusing

Dynamic focusing has been proposed[1] as a way to eliminate a conventional collimation and final focus system in linear colliders, and is a scheme that is more readily extended to colliders at several TeV center-of-mass energy. In this paper we examine several outstanding issues, in particular, the optimization of the lens and main beam parameters. Simulations of the lens-lens, lens-main, and m...

Collimation Systems in the next Linear Collider

Experience indicates that beam collimation will be an essential element of the next generation e+elinear colliders. A proposal for using nonlinear lenses to drive beam tails to large amplitudes was presented in a previous paper [l]. Here we study the optimization of such systems including effects of wakefields and optical aberrations. Protection and design of the scrapers in these systems are d...

The TESLA Post-linac Collimation System

1 Introduction In high-energy physics colliders, the 'halo' particles surrounding the core of the beams would cause intolerable background in the physics detectors if not removed. Collima-tion systems consisting of mechanical 'spoilers' on the order of a radiation length are placed close to the beam and used to 'scrape' the halo particles off: the particles scattered by the spoilers are then co...

Conventional Collimation and Linac Protection

We describe linac protection and a conventional collimation system appqxiate for a next linear collider. The linac accelerating structure can be protected from “worst credible failures” by a system of sacrificial spoilers. For the collimation system we consider the effects of asverse wakefields and the transmission, heating, mechanical stress, and edge-scattering properties of scrapers. We requ...

Crab-cavity Beam Dynamics Issues for an Lhc Upgrade

Modern colliders bring into collision a large number of bunches per pulse or per turn to achieve a high luminosity. The long-range beam-beam effects arising from parasitic encounters at such colliders are mitigated by introducing a crossing angle. Under these conditions, crab cavities can be used to restore effective head-on collisions and thereby to increase the geometric luminosity. Crab cavi...
