Comparison between Tcp and Sctp Overhead during Streaming

This paper describes an experiment about investigating thedifference in data overhead between TCP and SCTP, when streamingpart of a video over the Internet. The experiment was partly builtupon a previously published work by M. Muhammad and M. Berioli.They concluded that SCTP has more overhead in most casescompared to TCP over a simulated network. The purpose of thispaper is to investigate if the same thing is true when streaming overthe Internet. The experiment was conducted on a test bed that wasdeveloped for this paper by the author himself. A client connects tothe streaming server and starts downloading via TCP. At the sametime, it also initiates a SCTP connection to a SCTP-streaminggateway that downloads the file from the same source and sends it tothe client via the SCTP channel. The results show that SCTP hashigher overhead. The results also show a difference in theconsistency between the two protocols, with SCTP seeming to havegreater consistency when packet loss is roughly 10%. A conclusionof these results, TCP should be used if you are only concerned withlow overhead, while SCTP provides faster delivery under practicalconditions with some amount of packet loss. In the future, theexperiment should be recreated to check the validity of the results, asthe specific details of the test bed that was used could be a source oferror.
