چکیده

Abiotic stress factors [such as salinity, water availability (less or excess water), temperature extremes (freezing, cold, or high), metal/metalloids, nutrient stress, etc.] are basically severe menaces to the global agriculture, restricting the crop plants from reaching their full genetic potential and causing significant yield losses worldwide. In general, stresses are complex and multigenic traits that affect the plant performance significantly by reducing the growth, development, and, finally, the yield. To counteract the adverse effect of the stressors, plant have evolved efficient defense mechanisms by manipulating their tolerance potential through integratedmolecular and cellular responses. To face the environmental challenges in the form of various abiotic stresses, perception of stress signals as well as their transduction is a very crucial step for switching on adaptive responses to ensure the survival of plants. Therefore, understanding the physiological and molecular aspects of plant functions under stressful conditions, for example, the activation of cascades of molecular networks (perception of stress signals, transducers, transcription regulators, target stress related genes and metabolites), is desirable. Recent studies have revealed that understanding signal perception and its transduction is crucial for engineering stress tolerance in crop plants. This chapter appraises recent literature on stress signaling and stress responses in plants.

Proline accumulation and osmotic stress: an overview of P5CS gene in plants

Under osmotic stresses, proline accumulation is an important response of plants to these conditions. Proline is a compatible osmolyte which affects many cellular and molecular aspects of plant in both normal and stressful situations. Proline is shown to be involved in plant development in normal condition and in conferring resistance to plant under biotic and abiotic stresses. Therefore, many s...

Expressional Analysis and Role of Calcium Regulated Kinases in Abiotic Stress Signaling

Perception of stimuli and activation of a signaling cascade is an intrinsic characteristic feature of all living organisms. Till date, several signaling pathways have been elucidated that are involved in multiple facets of growth and development of an organism. Exposure to unfavorable stimuli or stress condition activates different signaling cascades in both plants and animal. Being sessile, pl...

Protein S-nitrosylation in plants under abiotic stress: an overview

Abiotic stress is one of the main problems affecting agricultural losses, and understanding the mechanisms behind plant tolerance and stress response will help us to develop new means of strengthening fruitful agronomy. The mechanisms of plant stress response are complex. Data obtained by experimental procedures are sometimes contradictory, depending on the species, strength, and timing applied...

ROS Regulation During Abiotic Stress Responses in Crop Plants

Abiotic stresses such as drought, cold, salt and heat cause reduction of plant growth and loss of crop yield worldwide. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anions (O2 (•-)), hydroxyl radical (OH•) and singlet oxygen ((1)O2) are by-products of physiological metabolisms, and are precisely controlled by enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense system...

Senescence, Stress, and Reactive Oxygen Species.

Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the earliest responses of plant cells to various biotic and abiotic stresses. ROS are capable of inducing cellular damage by oxidation of proteins, inactivation of enzymes, alterations in the gene expression, and decomposition of biomembranes. On the other hand, they also have a signaling role and changes in production of ROS can act as sign...
