چکیده

BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY. By Alexander Gero. New York, The Blakiston Company, 1952. xvi + 340 pp. $5.00. This book is proposed to serve as a nexus between undergraduate organic chemistry and graduate or medical school biochemistry. An indication of its scope can be gained by a listing of the table of contents. There are two chapters on physical chemistry, single chapters on the electronic theory of organic chemistry, optical isomerism, protein chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry, lipid chemistry, steroids, isoprenoid compounds, aromatic compounds, heterocycles, biochemical reactions, chemical structure and physiological activity, research methods, syntheses of important compounds, and a final list and description of recommended textbooks and monographs for supplementary reading. The book is thus comprehensive. But it lacks depth; this is especially marked in the presentation of physical chemistry and the discussion of chemical structure and physiological activity. The author states in his preface that "this text is essentially a somewhat advanced organic chemistry." Although the book may suffer from this pretense, it does not suffer from such substance. J. P. G.

Spatial vector electrocardiography; the clinical characteristics of S-T and T vectors.

more commonly encountered deformities are discussed. In addition, the isolated T-negativity syndrome is described, a rare type of precordial T-wave inversion which may be encountered in normal subjects and is often indistinguishable from the ST-T deformity of recent myocardial infarction. The spatial vector method of interpretation is found to provide a simple yet rational basis for the interpr...

A structural-functional MRI-based disease atlas: application to computer-aided-diagnosis of prostate cancer

Different imaging modalities or protocols of a single patient may convey different types of information regarding a disease for the same anatomical organ/tissue. On the other hand, multi-modal/multi-protocol medical images from several different patients can also provide spatial statistics of the disease occurrence, which in turn can greatly aid in disease diagnosis and aid in improved, accurat...

The effect of age on mean spatial QRS and T vectors.

The differentiation between normal and abnormal changes in conventional electrocardiography is substantially improved by consideration of normal age trends. For clinical application of spatial vectorcardiography, consideration of age trends is equally important. On the basis of statistical evaluation of magnitude, azimnuth and elevation of mean spatial QRS and T vectors in 105 healthy young men...

A Conceptual Cortical Surface Atlas

Volumetric, slice-based, 3-D atlases are invaluable tools for understanding complex cortical convolutions. We present a simple scheme to convert a slice-based atlas to a conceptual surface atlas that is easier to visualize and understand. The key idea is to unfold each slice into a one-dimensional vector, and concatenate a succession of these vectors--while maintaining as much spatial contiguit...
