Growth inhibitory action of saccharin and cyclamate on rats receiving a poor rice diet.

چکیده
I . The effect of saccharin and cyclamate on growth of young rats fed on a poor rice diet or a balanced diet was investigated. 2. Saccharin and cyclamate retarded the growth of rats on the multi-deficient diet but not of those on the well-balanced diet during an 8-week feeding period. 3. The sweeteners did not produce any macroscopic or microscopic changes in the liver, kidneys, intestines, spleen or lungs of the animals receiving the poor rice diet other than the changes resulting from the nutritional deficiency of the diet. 4. The sweeteners did not inhibit the liver xanthine oxidase activity of rats receiving the poor rice diet to an extent greater than the inhibition brought about by the deficiency of protein in the diet. 5 . When given by intubation to healthy rats, the sweeteners inhibited the induction of liver tryptophan oxygenase; given in vitro, they inhibited the succinate dehydrogenase activity of rat liver mitochondria.

Occlusion of Acetylcholinesterase Activity in Nerve Tissue Homogenates from the American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana), and its Release by Detergents
Renwick & Williams (1972) showed that the gut flora of rats chronically fed with cyclamate acquire the ability to convert cyclamate into cyclohexylamine by splitting the N-S bond, although this did not occur in all rat colonies (Drasar et al., 1970). The splitting of the N-S bond in saccharin could occur similarly to form 2-sulphobenzamide. To investigate the possibility of similar variations i...
متن کاملEffect of the Suspected Tumor Promoters Saccharin, Cyclamate, and Phenol on Nerve Growth Factor Binding and Response in Cultured Embryonic Chick Ganglia1
The suspected bladder tumor promoters saccharin and cyclamate reversibly inhibited nerve growth factor-induced neurite outgrowth in embryonic chick sensory ganglia, and active concentrations of these artificial sweeteners inhibited binding of 125l-labeled mouse submaxillary gland nerve growth factor as well. The skin tumor promoter phenol also reversibly in hibited neurite outgrowth, while comp...
متن کاملSaccharin and cyclamate inhibit binding of epidermal growth factor.
The binding of 125I-labeled mouse epidermal growth factor (EGF) to 18 cell lines, including HeLa (human carcinoma), MDCK (dog kidney cells), HTC (rat hepatoma), K22 (rat liver), HF (human foreskin), GM17 (human skin fibroblasts), XP (human xeroderma pigmentosum fibroblasts), and 3T3-L1 (mouse fibroblasts), was inhibited by saccharin and cyclamate. The human cells were more sensitive to inhibiti...
متن کاملFeeding studies on sodium cyclamate, saccharin and sucrose for carcinogenic and tumour-promoting activity.
Groups of 50 female Swiss mice were fed for 18 months on a standard diet containing sucrose (10 %), sodium cyclamate (5 %) or saccharin (5 %), while 100 control mice were fed on the standard diet alone. The survival times were comparable in all groups and no acute toxic effects were encountered. No local tumours in the gastro-intestinal tract, nor excess incidence of distant tumours, were found...
متن کاملPromoting Effect of Saccharin and DL-Tryptophan in Urinary Bladder Carcinogenesis1
we have been particularly concerned with the identification of possible morphological markers of neoplastic change in bladder epithelium, using light microscopy and both scan fling and transmission electron microscopy. This required a model in which the sequence of biological and pathological events was predictable. In a previous study, we identified as †̃ †̃subthreshold' †̃ a dose of FANFT,...
