چکیده
Experiments with Ξ − atoms are proposed in order to study the nuclear interaction of Ξ hyperons. The production of Ξ − in the (K − , K +) reaction, the Ξ − stopping in matter, and its atomic cascade are incorporated within a realistic evaluation of the results expected for Ξ − X-ray spectra across the periodic table, using an assumed Ξ-nucleus optical potential V opt. Several optimal targets for measuring the strong-interaction shift and width of the X-ray transition to the 'last' atomic level observed are singled out: F, Cl, I, Pb. The sensitivity of these observables to the parameters of V opt is considered. The relevance of such experiments is discussed in the context of strangeness −2 nuclear physics and multistrange nuclear matter. Finally, with particular reference to searches for the H dibaryon, the properties of Ξ − d atoms are also discussed. The role of Stark mixing, its effect on S and P state capture of Ξ − by the deuteron, together with estimates of the resulting probability for producing the H dibaryon are considered in detail.

The effective intercept parameter of the two-pion Bose-Einstein Correlation function, λ * , is found to be sensitive to partial restoration of U A (1) symmetry in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions. An increase in the yield of the η ′ meson, proposed earlier as a signal of partial U A (1) restoration, is shown to create a " hole " in the low p t region of λ *. A comparison with NA44 data [1]...

The static potential in the 3d SU(2) Higgs model is computed by a variational calculation employing Wilson loops and two-meson operators. String breaking is demonstrated numerically, the breaking scale is determined and the results are compared with a quenched calculation.

This document gives a detailed account of the terms used in the computation of the ground state mean field and the ground state correlations. While the general approach to this description is given in a separate paper (nucl-th/9802029) we give here the explicite expressions used. PACS: 21.60.−n, 21.60.Gx, 21.60.Cs, 21.60.Jz
