Bovine Embryo Transfer, by R. J. Mapletoft; R0104.1106
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Bovine embryo transfer technology involves the selection and management, both physical and pharmacological, of donor and recipient animals, and the collection and transfer of embryos within a narrow window of time following estrus. This technology has been incorporated into large dairy and beef cattle operations, and often requires the participation of herd veterinarians. The following review is based extensively on handout material for a pre-conference seminar presented by the author for the annual meeting of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP). It also draws heavily on material contained in prior reviews, extensive literature of primary research on the topic, including reviews and reports from the author's laboratory.

History and perspectives on bovine embryo transfer
On a worldwide basis, more than 750,000 embryos are produced annually from superovulated donors and more than 450,000 embryos are produced using in vitro techniques. Superovulation and embryo collection are done as frequently as every 30 days. Cryopreservation and direct transfer of frozen-thawed embryos results in pregnancy rates near that of fresh embryos. Since the zona pellucida-intact in v...
متن کاملEvaluation and classification of bovine embryos
Bovine Embryo transfer has been used widely to reproduce the most valuable females in the herd, with about 750,000 embryos produced annually from superovulated donors and more than 450,000 embryos produced using in vitro techniques. Furthermore, embryos are the safest and most cost effective alternatives to move genetics internationally because of their low risk of transmitting diseases. One of...

Dr Reuben John Mapletoft was born and raised on Little Pipestone Ranch – the family farm near Fort Pitt, Saskatchewan, Canada. He had an interest in animals from an early age – an interest that led him to enrol in the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, where he graduated in 1967. He returned to Saskatchewan and became the first intern at the newly formed Western College of ...
متن کاملTreatments for the synchronisation of bovine recipients for fixed-time embryo transfer and improvement of pregnancy rates.
Although embryo transfer technology has been used commercially in cattle for many years, the inefficiency of oestrus detection, especially in recipients, has limited the widespread application of this technology. The most useful alternative to increase the number of recipients utilised in an embryo transfer program is the use of protocols that allow for embryo transfer without the need for oest...
متن کاملControl of ovarian function for assisted reproductive technologies in cattle
Although the discovery that follicles in bovine ovaries grow in a wave-like fashion has presented challenges for estrus synchronization and superovulation, recent protocols, designed to control follicular function have permitted fixed-time AI or fixed-time embryo transfer with high pregnancy rates, and the initiation of superstimulatory treatments at a self-appointed time, all without the neces...
