Directional Flow Visualization of 2D and 3D Vector Fields

چکیده
No single natural representation exists for visualizing all of the information in a vector eld. As a result, numerous methods have been developed, each emphasizing diierent aspects of the ow. This paper presents a method of ow visualization that highlights directional information in the eld by overloading feature glyphs with directional information information through a technique similar to bump mapping 1]. At each sampled point in the 3D volume a glyph is associated with the vector at that point. Vector magnitude is mapped to glyph hue and the glyph surface normals are perturbed proportional to vector direction. Glyph surface shading based on variable lighting conditions and the perturbed surface normals then reveal directional information in the eld. Varying the lighting conditions emphasizes diierent vector directions and direction ranges. Alternatively, the glyph intensity can be mapped to vector magnitude and lighting calculations eeect glyph hue rather than intensity. The method is straight forward, computationally inexpensive, and can be combined with other techniques that use glyph representation for feature visualization.

متن کاملAn Illustrative Visualization Framework for 3D Vector Fields
Most 3D vector field visualization techniques suffer from the problem of visual clutter, and it remains a challenging task to effectively convey both directional and structural information of 3D vector fields. In this paper, we present a novel visualization framework that combines the advantages of clustering methods and illustrative rendering techniques to generate a concise and informative de...

Introduction: Time-resolved (CINE) phase contrast (PC) MRI permits the assessment of blood flow within entire 3D vascular structures [1, 2]. The resulting high-dimensional datasets (3 spatial dimensions, 3 velocity directions, and time) require new visualization and quantification methods to derive reliable clinical parameters. In this context, an advanced flow quantification tool was developed...
متن کاملGPU-Based Streamlines for Surface-Guided 3D Flow Visualization
Visualizing 3D flow fields intrinsically suffers from problems of clutter and occlusion. A common practice to alleviate these issues is to restrict the visualization to feature surfaces that capture important characteristics of the underlying data. However, this often comes at costs of losing information due to the inherent projection of the 3D field on a 2D surface, which may limit the techniq...
متن کاملTopological Representations of Vector Fields
This chapter gives an overview on topological methods for vector field processing. After introducing topological features for 2D and 3D vector fields, we discuss how to extract and use them as visualization tools for complex flow phenomena. We do so both for static and dynamic fields. Finally, we introduce further applications of topological methods for compressing, simplifying, comparing, and ...
