Managing bloodstream infections in patients who have short-term central venous catheters.

چکیده
Catheter-related bloodstream infections can be complicated to manage, but a growing body of evidence supports specific recommendations. In 2009, the Infectious Diseases Society of America published updated guidelines for the diagnosis and management of all intravascular catheter-related infections. Here we provide a focused review on the management of bloodstream infections in adult patients with short-term (not surgically implanted and not tunneled) central venous catheters, including peripherally inserted central catheters. This review should serve as a ready reference for providers (eg, hospitalists, surgeons, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, intensivists) managing adult patients with short-term central venous catheters in place.

Chapter 16. Prevention of Intravascular Catheter-Associated Infections
Central venous catheters inserted for short-term use have become common and important devices in caring for hospitalized patients, especially the critically ill. While they have important advantages (eg, ability to administer large volumes of fluid), short-term vascular catheters are also associated with serious complications, the most common of which is infection. Intravascular catheters are o...

ABSTRACT Aim. We sought to review studies regarding interventions to prevent or reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). Background. CRBSIs are associated with peripheral and central intravenous catheters, including nontunneled central catheters, tunneled central catheters, peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC), totally implanted intravascular access devices (por...
متن کاملAntiseptic-impregnated central venous catheters: their evaluation in burn patients.
Central venous catheter-related infections are an important source of morbidity and mortality in burn patients. Antiseptic impregnated catheters have been recommended to prevent infections related to central venous lines in high-risk patients who require short-term catheters. This prospective, randomized, and controlled study compared the efficacy of standard and antiseptic devices in reducing ...
متن کاملArteriovenous fistulae as an alternative to central venous catheters for delivery of long-term home parenteral nutrition.
BACKGROUND & AIMS The success of home parenteral nutrition (HPN) programs is compromised by complications of central venous catheters (CVCs), such as occlusions and bloodstream infections. We performed a retrospective analysis of complication rates of arteriovenous fistulae versus CVCs in patients on long-term HPN. METHODS Data were collected from 127 consecutive patients who received HPN bet...
متن کاملManagement Of Fever And Suspected Infection In Pediatric Patients With Central Venous Catheters.
The use of indwelling central venous catheters is essential for pediatric patients who require hemodialysis, parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, or other medications. Fever is a common chief complaint in the emergency department, and fever in a patient with a central venous catheter may be related to a common cause of fever, or it may be due to a catheter-associated bloodstream infection. Cathe...
