چکیده

In the last two decades, research on the hydraulics of skimming flows down stepped chutes was driven by needs for better design guidelines. Skimming flows are characterized by significant momentum transfer from the main stream to the recirculation zones. Investigations are difficult because of the complex nature of the flow, the strong flow aeration, and the interactions between entrained air and turbulence. This study provides a comprehensive database on main stream and cavity flow interactions in skimming flows down a stepped chute. Measurements were conducted on a large facility (α = 15.9°, h = 0.05 and 0.1 m, W = 1 m) with precise instrumentation based upon a Froude similitude. Air–water velocity and turbulence measurements demonstrated a well-defined mixing layer developing downstream of each step edge in which the velocity profiles had the same shape as classical monophase flow results. A comparative analysis of air–water flow properties for Froude similar flow conditions showed a good agreement between the two step heights in terms of dimensionless distributions of air content, velocity, and turbulence intensity, but dimensionless bubble count rates, turbulence levels, and bubble chord sizes were improperly scaled.

Air–water flow properties in step cavity down a stepped chute

For the last three decades, the research into skimming flows down stepped chutes was driven by needs for better design guidelines. The skimming flow is characterised by some momentum transfer from the main stream to the recirculation zones in the shear layer developing downstream of each step edge. In the present study some physical modelling was conducted in a relatively large facility and det...

Experimental Study of Turbulence Manipulation in Stepped Spillways. Implications on Flow Resistance in Skimming Flows

Current expertise in air-water turbulent flows on stepped chutes is limited to laboratory experiments at low to moderate Reynolds numbers on flat horizontal steps. In this study, highly turbulent air-water flows skimming down a large-size stepped chute were systematically investigated with a 22o slope. Turbulence manipulation was conducted using vanes or longitudinal ribs to enhance interaction...

Interactions between Free-surface, Free-stream Turbulence and Cavity Recirculation in Open Channel Flows: Measurements and Turbulence Manipulation

New experiments were conducted in a large stepped channel with a 22o slope operating at large Reynolds numbers. Interactions between free-surface and cavity recirculation were systematically investigated in the skimming flow regime. Turbulence manipulation was further conducted and identical experiments were performed with 4 configurations. Basic results demonstrated a strong influence of cavit...

Drag reduction in skimming flow on stepped spillways by aeration Réduction du frottement des écoulements écumant sur les seuils en marches d’escalier par aération

In skimming flows on stepped spillway, flow resistance is predominantly a form drag process. Cavity recirculation and air entrainment are intense. The interactions between entrained air bubbles and mixing layers may cause some reduction in flow resistance. The paper presents new evidence showing a reduction in friction factor in skimming flow with increasing free-surface aeration. The experimen...

Effects of End Sill and Step Slope on Stepped Spillway Energy Dissipation

In this study, experimental procedure and laboratory works have been conducted to investigate the energy loss rate on stepped spillway, using inclined steps together with end sill. To have a more elucidated investigation inclined steps with different slopes (Horizontal , 7, 10, and 12 degrees with respect to the horizon) and end sill with different thicknesses (5 and 10 mm) and heights (6, 8, 1...
