Patterns as Formulas: Patterns in the Digital Humanities

چکیده
During the last years, in particular due to the Digital Humanities, empirical processes, data capturing or data analysis got more and more popular as part of humanities research. In this paper, we want to show that even the complete scientific method of natural science can be applied in the humanities. By applying the scientific method to the humanities, certain kinds of problems can be solved in a confirmable and replicable manner. In particular, we will argue that patterns may be perceived as the analogon to formulas in natural science. This may provide a new way of representing solution-oriented knowledge in the humanities. Transcendent Wisdom Patterns for Political Science
Abstract:About whether Islamic philosophy can play a role in the production of humanities? There is a continuum of ideas that, on the one hand, are ideas that have neglected the role of Islamic philosophy in general. And on the other hand, there are ideas that incor-porate the teachings of Islamic philosophy into paradigmatic elements for the produc-tion of a new type of human science. In...
متن کاملThe Impact of Different Frequency Patterns on the Syntactic Production of a 6-year-old EFL Home Learner: A Case Study
This longitudinal study investigated the impact of different Frequency Patterns (FP) on the syntactic production of a six-year-old EFL learner in a home context. Target syntactic constructions were presented using games and plays and were traced for their occurrence patterns in input and output. Following each instruction period, the constructions were measured through immediate and delayed ora...
متن کاملJoint and multi-authored publication patterns in the Digital Humanities
The stereotype of the multi-authored Digital Humanities paper is well known but has not, until now, been empirically investigated. Here we present the results of a statistical analysis of collaborative publishing patterns in Computers and the Humanities (CHum) (1966–2004); Literary and Linguistic Computing (LLC) (1986–2011); and, as a control, the Annals of the Association of American Geographe...
متن کاملModeling intra-textual variation with entropy and surprisal: topical vs. stylistic patterns
We present a data-driven approach to investigate intra-textual variation by combining entropy and surprisal. With this approach we detect linguistic variation based on phrasal lexico-grammatical patterns across sections of research articles. Entropy is used to detect patterns typical of specific sections. Surprisal is used to differentiate between more and less informationally-loaded patterns a...
متن کامل"But let me talk": An Investigation into Teachers' Interaction Patterns in EFL Classrooms
Drawing on Walsh's (2012) idea that boosting learners' contribution and interaction can play a key role in their foreign language learning, this mixed-methods study tried to cast some light on the ways by which teachers, via their choice and use of language, create or block learners' contribution in direct interactions in the classroom. A total of 800-minute recordings of 10 teachers' talks and...
