Central synaptic integration: linear after all?
Unitary synaptic currents in hippocampus show small variability. Experimental evidence suggests that the neuron is endowed with mechanisms to reduce location-dependent differences in amplitude and time course of synaptic events, contributing to small variability. These mechanisms may allow the neuron to count individual quanta and thereby linearize integration of unitary events.
متن کاملNoradrenergic System Increases Miniature Excitatory Synaptic Currents in the Barrel Cortex
Introduction: Neurons in layer II and III of the somatosensory cortex in rats show high frequency (33 ± 13 Hz) of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) that their rates and amplitudes are independent of sodium channels. There are some changes in these currents in neurodegenerative and psychological disorders. Regarding to well known roles of the neuromodulatory brain systems in...
متن کاملFour-dimensional multi-site photolysis of caged neurotransmitters
Neurons receive thousands of synaptic inputs that are distributed in space and time. The systematic study of how neurons process these inputs requires a technique to stimulate multiple yet highly targeted points of interest along the neuron's dendritic tree. Three-dimensional multi-focal patterns produced via holographic projection combined with two-photon photolysis of caged compounds can prov...
متن کاملA Dynamic Computational Study of the Role of Ion Channels in a Neuron
Neurons are specialized cells that exchange information across connections, called synapses, using electrical signals. These signals are formed by a potential difference (a voltage) across the cell membrane. This voltage changes as ion channels, specialized protein pores, open and close to allow ions to flow across the membrane. The region of a neuron which typically receives signals is called ...
متن کاملBilinearity in Spatiotemporal Integration of Synaptic Inputs
Neurons process information via integration of synaptic inputs from dendrites. Many experimental results demonstrate dendritic integration could be highly nonlinear, yet few theoretical analyses have been performed to obtain a precise quantitative characterization analytically. Based on asymptotic analysis of a two-compartment passive cable model, given a pair of time-dependent synaptic conduct...
